BiostatisticianCentre for Proteomic & Genomic Research (CPGR)BioinformaticsSouth Africa-Cape Town Background:
The Centre for Proteomic & Genomic Research (CPGR) seeks to hire a Biostatistician to complement a Bioinformatics project team participating in the NIH funded H3ABioNet program at the CPGR node. H3ABioNet (http://www.h3abionet.org), led by the CBIO group at University of Cape Town (UCT), is leading an initiative with over thirty institutions around Africa to develop a Pan African Bioinformatics Network for the Human Heredity and Health (H3Africa) Initiative (http://www.h3africa.org/). The aim of the network is to build bioinformatics capacity in Africa and develop a bioinformatics support platform for H3Africa large scale human genomics research projects.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
• Being part of the H3ABioNet helpdesk task force to assist with statistical queries from H3A consortia.
• Providing statistical/bioinformatics support for large scale genomics/omics projects in a timeous manner.
• Assisting life scientists with experimental design and data analysis.
• Training life scientists, bioinformaticians and computational biologists in basic and advance statistics.
• Taking part in various research projects carried out at the CPGR node
• (Co) Preparing training materials according to the HCD platform requirements.
• Assisting the node manager with network management duties.
• Supporting developers in designing software and algorithms.
• (Co) Creating grant applications to national and international funding organisations.
Requirements
• PhD or MSc qualification either in statistics, computer Science, medical statistics, bioinformatics or health informatics.
• A strong background in bioinformatics or statistics.
• Three or more years’ experience in statistical design and analysis of large-scale genomic projects.
• Familiarity with concepts in Next Generation Sequencing, Genotyping, Genome Wide Association analysis, SNP/Variant analysis.
• Working knowledge of Python, Perl, Statistica and R.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Training skills are an advantage.
• Willingness to get trained and transfer knowledge.
