Job Description:
This role will involve substantial development responsibilities as well as overseeing 2 bioinformaticians/web developers. The end product will be an automated system to identify pathogenic variants in constitutional disorders including hereditary cancers. The system will include a web interface to accept samples from the wet-lab and after analysis deliver reports to clinicians.

Responsibilities:

Duties/Accountabilities

Supervision:

  1. Provides consultation and supervision to designated staff, establishing clear definitions of responsibility for each employee, reviewing workload assignments, and adjusting schedules according to workload to ensure project objectives and milestones are met.
  2. Establishes priorities and provides guidance and technical advice by facilitating resolutions to work problems and by monitoring work activities to ensure project and clinical standards are met.
  3. Assists with staff recruitment through interviewing internal and external applicants, assisting with making hiring decisions
Technical:
  1. Develops bioinformatics tools for data processing and analysis.
  2. Provides expertise, guidance and technical advice regarding resolutions to work issues including web development, bioinformatics pipeline automation, and delivery of clinical reports.
  3. Interprets statistical analyses and makes recommendations. Prepares reports on statistical findings for publication and presentation.
  4. Conducts feasibility studies for computerization by determining user requirements, examining and identifying problems with existing systems and recommending modifications to and/or new systems; provides details of estimated implementation costs.
  5. Evaluation of third-party technical solutions and planning of how to incorporate new systems with legacy systems.
Administrative:
  1. Responsible for adhering to project guidelines and standards.
  2. Works with Medical Director and project manager to complete project financial and scientific reports.
  3. Attends and participates in scientific and planning meetings to give and receive feedback regarding project progress. Formal presentations will be required.
Other:
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

• Graduation from a recognized Master’s program in an appropriate discipline such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or Genetics and five years related experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to the Medical Director.

• Familiarity with the development, testing, and maintenance of relational databases, and object-relational mappers (e.g. PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy).

• Experience working in a Unix environment, including experience with shell scripting and common command-line tools.

• Expertise in one or more scripting language(s) (e.g. Python).

• Experience working with next-generation sequencing data and tools (i.e. tools for alignment and variant-calling).

• Expertise in statistical analysis using modern computational tools. Experience with any relevant tools will be considered, but R and Python are preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to accept responsibility and work independently.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.

• Excellent organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

• Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
