Job Description:
Duties: The Eukaryotic Pathogen Database resource (EuPathDB.org) is a large, multi-institution project that develops scientific data-mining websites used by researchers worldwide to study selected microbial pathogens, including those responsible for malaria and enteric disease. Leveraging experience with the integration and analysis of pathogen genomics and functional data, we seek to fill new positions, as we expand to support clinical and epidemiological data-mining, by incorporating global projects (such as Mal-ED) that focus on the interplay between early child-hood malnutrition and the enteric infectious disease burden in developing countries. The Community Outreach Specialist will join a growing team responsible for communicating with diverse audiences, including not only laboratory research scientists & epidemiologists, but also clinicians, field biologists, and policy-makers. The successful applicant will work collaboratively as part of a 30+ member team including biologists, annotators, data-loaders, ontologists, user-inter face specialists, software developers, outreach staff, and others to present our global user base with intuitive and informative web interfaces for accessing and interrogating large-scale datasets. Effective communication skills are required, including the ability to coordinate groups from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds. An understanding of the challenges posed by large-scale epidemiological data is highly desirable. This position requires domestic and international travel, active participation in scientific meetings (Platform presentations a must at the Sr level), instruction at workshops (Design and implementation of workshops at Sr level) and webinars, participation in scientific writing (Leading scientific writing projects at the Sr level), and keeping up-to-date with the pertinent scientific literature. Qualifications: JR Level: Bachelor’s degree and minimum of one year of programming or systems analysis experience; or equivalent. Master’s degree or equivalent in Biology or related field, with a minimum of three years of work experience (involving clinical epidemiology and/or biostatistics) highly preferred. Effective communication skills including managing teleconference meetings, explaining complex data and scientific concepts to diverse audiences and active representation of web resources at scientific conferences are a must. Excellent writing skills are essential. Active interest and experience with bioinformatics applications and data analysis is highly desirable. SR Level: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of programming or systems analysis experience, or equivalent. Masters or PhD highly preferred in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or related field and 5-6 yr relevant work experience (involving clinical epidemiology and/or biostatistics) highly preferred.
