Job Description:
You will be working within the Statistics and Bioinformatics department primarily fulfilling a research support role, which will involve carrying out bioinformatics analyses of large data sets from human, vector and pathogen population genetics studies. You will be developing applications that apply state of the art algorithms to relevant data sets and contributing to publications, grant writing, experimental design, power and sample size calculations. Additionally you will be expected to lead the integration of a newly established high performance computing centre into research support and teaching. You will have a MSc/PhD in bioinformatics or computational biology with a strong quantitative background. You will need knowledge of statistical methods and experience of algorithm development. It’s also essential to have the ability to program in low level languages such as C based languages.

The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Council's largest establishment conducting medical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in low-income countries by excellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes. To reflect changes in national and global health priorities and new international funding opportunities, a new research portfolio has been organized under three themes: Nutrition; Disease Control & Elimination; Vaccine and Immunity. These themes have been selected to target health needs of developing countries, to reinforce sub-regional and international collaborations and to address some of the major current priorities in the Sustainable Development Goals. This role attracts a £6,500 per annum bioinformatics allowance. Also for displaced staff we offer overseas allowances, furnished accommodation, flights, excellent holiday entitlement, membership of MRC final salary pension scheme and other benefits.
