Job Description:
HJF is seeking a Computational Biologist to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP. The incumbent will be responsible for carrying out scientific projects on the role of humoral immunity in infection and vaccine development in support of the goals and objectives of the Systems Serology Core and under the supervision of senior scientists. The position involves utilizing large datasets to assess characteristics of functional antibodies elicited during infection and vaccination. The incumbent will be part of a team of biologists, clinicians and statisticians working on a range of questions related to vaccine research focusing principally on HIV, but also Dengue, Ebola or MERS-coV. The candidate will work with different stakeholders in a highly multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities:

1. Designs and performs systems biology analyses, including to understand the relationships between biophysical data characterizing virus-specific antibodies (including IgG subclasses, Fc receptor alleles, Complement) induced by vaccination or natural infection and corresponding functional properties (e.g. antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis).

2. Develops model-based designs to process very large datasets with multi-objective optimization.

3. Contributes to the science through independent and collaborative research including co-authoring papers.

4. Develops, evaluates and makes publicly available computer code following principles of reproducible research.

5. Delivers talks on the results of the research.

6. Plans, coordinates, and conducts independent scientific research on outlined objectives; contributes to collaborative research projects.

7. Maintains current knowledge of and contributes to advancements in the field through participation in professional organizations, scientific conferences, reading industry journals, and publication of manuscripts.

8. Assists with training staff as needed and collaborates with scientists within and outside of MHRP.

9. Follows all MHRP and WRAIR safety procedures and completes required training in a timely manner; Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment; promotes workplace safety.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Knowledge of appropriate scientific area.

-Experience with systems biology data.

-Experience with project planning, implementation and data analysis.

-Strong analytical and problem solving skills and the desire to learn new technologies are required.

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

-The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and be goal-oriented.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, mathematical modeling, systems biology, statistics, mathematics, machine learning, computational science or related discipline.

Minimum Experience: 0-2 years.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to communicate verbally, write and prepare documents and travel to and move within HJF program research sites. Long periods of standing and sitting

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Incumbent will be under the supervision of MHRP’s leadership.

Work Environment: Standard office environment within research laboratory. This laboratory is densely populated and requires good interpersonal skills for effective job performance.
