Job Description:
As a Computational Biologist at Counsyl, your role will be to invent a new generation of clinical molecular diagnostic tests. As a member of a tight interdisciplinary team, you’ll work closely with molecular biologists, geneticists, and software engineers to invent and construct novel assays based on Next Generation Sequencing.

Contributions include developing statistical analysis methods for new DNA sequencing assays, extracting robust signals from noisy experimental data, working with molecular biologists to refine sequencing protocols, and sharing your methods in the form of simple re-usable software. Must thrive in a professional atmosphere, where interdisciplinary teams are central to project success.

What you'll do:

  • Work closely with molecular biologists, geneticists, and software engineers to research and prototype new clinical molecular diagnostic assays.
  • Characterize data resulting from novel molecular assays and guide protocol development from a statistical perspective.
  • Originate new ideas for genetic testing, and lead interdisciplinary teams in exploring those ideas via experimentation.
  • Develop working prototypes that can be translated into the high-volume production lab.
  • Work with legal staff to secure intellectual property rights for your inventions.
About you:
  • Hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Statistics, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Computer Science, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years experience developing methods to analyze large, noisy real-world data sets, especially in the context of molecular biology and/or human genetics.
  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing a huge plus.
  • Strong computational skills, fluency in Python a big plus.
  • Experience with modern medical genetics data sets (e.g., 1000 genomes, TCGA) a big plus.
  • Working knowledge of nucleic acid chemistry is a must.
  • Working knowledge of software engineering practice is a plus.

Additional Info:
Our goal is to make the human genome practically useful for life-altering decisions. Our clinical assays screen tens of thousands of patient samples per month for autosomal recessive genetic disease (like Cystic Fibrosis and Tay-Sachs disease), Down’s syndrome, and inherited risk of developing various forms of cancer (like BRCA and Lynch Syndrome). Our patients are people who are interested in maximizing their own health and the health of their children. Our assays are performed on over 5% of pregnancies in the United States

Counsyl is a health technology company that offers DNA screening for diseases that can impact men, women and their children. The Counsyl philosophy is simple: screen for diseases where advanced knowledge makes a difference in health outcomes, whether it’s changing a behavior, pursuing preventative measures, or simply preparing for what lies ahead.

The Counsyl team includes an accomplished group of problem-solvers — top engineers, scientists, and designers — who are taking the lead on building the modern clinical laboratory. Scientific rigor, custom robotics, and software are at the heart of every Counsyl product, resulting in better, faster and more affordable screens that are broadly accessible. Beyond the laboratory, Counsyl offers doctors and patients a technology platform for results delivery in real time, with on-demand access to board-certified genetic counselors.

Counsyl has screened more than 600,000 patients and served more than 6,000 health care professionals in its CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited and NYS CLEP-permitted clinical laboratory. The company has raised a total of $102 million and is privately backed by Pilot Growth Equity, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Founders Fund, Felicis Ventures, David Drummond, and other high profile investors.
