Job Description:

ISCB Job Board

Computational Biologist - Biomarker DevelopmentFoundation MedicineResearch and DevelopmentUSA-MA-Cambridge Foundation Medicine is dedicated to helping bring personalized cancer medicine into routine clinical practice. Harnessing advanced technology, Foundation is developing clinical laboratory tests that will broadly capture the most relevant tumor genomic and other molecular information in a single test, and connect it with relevant scientific and medical knowledge to help oncologists determine the right treatment for each patient.

The Computational Biologist will be responsible for leading development of clinical diagnostic assays and biomarker signatures for pharmaceutical partners through research, software implementation and validation of advanced computational methods. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, solid programming experience, a high level of professional maturity, ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure, and the ability to work independently.

Responsibilities:
* Development and analysis of advanced computational methods to enhance FM’s clinical diagnostic platform
* Software development and validation of clinical diagnostic assays for pharmaceutical partners based on massively parallel sequencing (NGS) data
* Extensive documentation and testing of production‐level computational biology software
* Collaborate with a group of bioinformaticians, software engineers, regulatory affairs, and quality assurance specialists focused on developing massively parallel sequencing technology for FDA‐regulated products
* Work with the production team to develop scalable protocols that enable high‐throughput interpretation of sequencing data for hundreds of samples in parallel within acceptable computational time/cost
* Process, analyze and interpret large volumes of data as part of internal and external scientific studies. Develop automated methods and software to support large‐scale bioinformatics analysis
* Develop and implement analytical tools capable of troubleshooting the technical steps and filtering poor quality sequencing information
* Present scientific and technical data/progress/innovations to both internal and external scientific colleagues in a clear and cohesive manner.
* Work independently and prepare timetables, deliverables, and project schedules

  Qualifications:
* Fluency in programming and scripting languages is required (C++, Java, Python, Perl). Ability to write production‐level
software is highly desirable.
* Experience in developing algorithms for analysis of biological data. Application in NGS data is highly desirable.
* Experience in cancer research, including a working understanding of computation approaches for cancer genome analysis is desirable
* A track record of achievement in the academic setting
* Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, fast‐paced, dynamic and results‐oriented environment
* Ability to present data to a multidisciplinary audience in a clear and cohesive manner
* Excellent teamwork, time management and organizational skills

Education or Experience
* Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or related fields, with a significant formal quantitative base
* 2+ years of industry experience preferred. Equivalent post‐doctoral experience will be considered.

(Pending change to description: MS Degree with 5+ years experience will be acceptable substitute for PhD in this case.)

Software-Engineering focused bioinformaticists and computational biologists with NGS protocols and pipeline development experience in a genomics industry enterprise are strongly urged to apply.
