Job Description:
The Broad Institute is looking for an exceptional candidate for a unique opportunity. Single cell genomics is revolutionizing our understanding of biology. From redefining our understanding of the types of cells, a fundamental unit in biology, to translating this knowledge to better understand disease phenotypes and the implications of this to therapeutics. Work with some of the premier labs in the world to develop diverse next generation single cell sequencing pipelines and computational tools. This position represents an exciting opportunity to work on the cutting-edge of computational biology and computer science as a member of a team building big data solutions that scale to ever-increasing dimensions. The Broad Institute provides a vibrant research environment with close links to top academic and industry institutions across the Boston area and the world.

The successful candidate will lead the design, implementation, and improvement of computational pipelines in cloud scalable environments. We are looking for an engineering minded candidate who will become an expert in data pipelines used by the single cell community while using their knowledge of cloud platforms to create resources for the global scientific community. This individual will work in a team actively working with specialist communities to develop computational pipelines and translate these solutions to scalable cloud solutions. Additionally, this person will be actively involved in all aspects of maintaining current pipelines, including evaluating and implementing enhancements.

Single cell genomics is revolutionizing our understanding of biology. From the basic work of discovering the complete continuum of cells type found in life, a fundamental unit in biology, to translating this knowledge to better understand disease phenotypes and the implications of this to therapeutics. This revolution leverages a vivid ecosystem of analysis, continuing to grow in complexity and sophistication. This position represents an exciting opportunity to work with world-renowned methodologists from across the world who are pioneering these analyses and make them more available and accessible to the greater scientific community.

The successful candidate will work with single cell genomics methodologists around the world to learn their methodology, create standards around canonical analyses, and demonstrate these standards in working applications. We are looking for an inquisitive computational biologist who is capable of learning and applying a diversity of analyses. This person should be excited about formalizing how to think about these methodologies, and discovering canonical patterns of analysis. This person should be a community builder, working with groups interested in applying these standards in their own applications. This person will be an essential part of a team who will demonstrate these standards in an established cloud-based, single cell genomics portal and should be comfortable with cloud and web-based solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To become an expert in implementing single cell genomics pipelines, evaluating emerging trends and methodology, and selecting best-in-class technologies to make available to our research community.
  • To be an expert on optimizing computational pipelines to scalable cloud infrastructure using in-house developed platforms and scalable infrastructure api.
  • To be responsible for the development, enhancement, and maintenance of current and new bioinformatics pipelines prototypes.
  • To evaluate the performance of pipelines, defining key metrics to measure performance, and troubleshooting samples/runs.
  • To identify key technical and scientific data sets to use in benchmarking new methodology and establish regression tests to ensure reliable and reproducible performance.
  • To oversee the process of translating prototyped sequence analysis pipelines to professional, scalable pipelines.
Requirements:
  • Experience with developing next-generation sequencing pipelines or experience working with images computationally (eg. machine vision, and image processing).
  • Have experience with at least one scripting language (preferably Python, R) and one formal programming language (eg. Java, C family, Scala).
  • Must have experience with scalable cloud environments (GCP preferred).
  • Must be comfortable in a Linux environment.
  • Expertise within one of the following fields: Genetics, Genomics/Computational Biology, Biology, Statistics, Algorithm Development, Machine vision, Image processing, Machine learning, or Big Data processing pipelines.
  • Graduate work in Computer Science, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, or a related field is required.
  • Must be compassionate and enjoy helping others.
