The following opportunity exists in our South San Francisco, CA headquarters: Computational Biologist II/III Description: Advances in mass spectrometry proteomics have revolutionized the study of cellular proteins, allowing us to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of disease and the effects of therapeutic agents at a depth and scale unthinkable a decade ago. The Discovery Proteomics group develops and implements mass spectrometry methods that differentiate biological conditions by characterizing the abundance, state and interactions of proteins within biological samples. As is true across Genentech, research in the group is fast paced and highly collaborative, drawing on the expertise of some of the world's leading experts in biochemistry, cell biology and human disease. We are seeking a Computational Biologist to oversee analysis of proteomic mass spectrometry data, to develop computational tools, and to work as part of a tightly integrated team to address biological questions that affect human disease. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or related field. Candidates with a master’s degree and a minimum of five years’ experience in analytical sciences may also be considered. Experience with mass spectrometry (MS) proteomics and high-throughput computational analysis of MS data are desirable, but not prerequisites to success. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to interrogate large data sets and address biological hypotheses. Strong programming and software engineering skills are required for this position and should include competence in at least two of the following languages: Java,PHP, python and R. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with both computational and bench scientists are essential for success in this collaborative role.
