:GN-Genomics Description   The Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE-JGI, a division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) has an exciting opportunity available for a postdoctoral fellow on a multi-institutional collaborative project.  Under general supervision, this individual will work as part of the Microbial Systems Group on the analysis of microbial community genomics data targeting plant-associated microbial communities. Responsibilities include obtaining sequence data, including ribosomal tag sequences, isolate and single cell genomes, metagenomes and metatranscriptomes, from internal or external sources and analyzing and interpreting the data with a variety of standard or custom tools. The position may also include planning experimental sequencing projects, sample collection, and environmental nucleic acid extraction.  Will store and organize results for presentation and viewing by internal and external project team members and the wider scientific community and prepare results for publication in scientific journals.  Position reports to Microbial Systems Group lead. Responsibilities:
  • Work with JGI staff and collaborators to obtain microbial community data including ribosomal tag sequences, shotgun metagenome sequence data, single cell whole-genome-shotgun sequence data, and metatranscriptome sequence data using Illumina, Pacific Biosciences and possibly other sequencing technologies.
  • Employ internal and external software and web-based analysis tools for processing and analyzing collected data.
  • Plan and execute microbial community research projects in collaboration with external partners.
  • Store and organize results for presentation and viewing by JGI collaborators and the wider scientific community.
  • Interact with internal and external collaborators to ensure efficient communication and completion of analysis projects.
  • Document group analysis procedures and methods for reference.
  • Write results up for publication.
  • Present research at both internal and external forums.
  • Preferred - Attend and present technical status reports at group meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in life sciences or computer science with some relevant research experience in both areas.
  • Strong background in bioinformatics, molecular biology and genomics.
  • Experience with: use of computational methods, databases of genomic information, and methods of analysis of biological sequence data especially next-generation sequence data.
  • Experience using PC, Mac and/or UNIX operating systems.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including Research Associates, Scientists and Software Engineers.
  • Proficient in computer programming.
  • Preferred - Background in plant biology and/or host-microbe interactions
Note:  This is a 2-year appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Work will be performed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA. A background check is required. About Us Rapid technological advances in genomics have transformed modern biology.
