Job Description:
Listing Info Monsanto is seeking an MS or PhD graduate student in computational biology, statistics, computer science, or a similar program for a summer 2015 internship opportunity. The position requires development of novel methods to learn how protein families and metabolic functions evolve across diverse microbiota, given large amounts of genomic data. The applicant will develop computational methods (i)to compare and analyze a broad phylogenetic range of microbial genomes, (ii) to infer molecular function based on genomic and evolutionary context, and (iii)to integrate molecular data and genomic data to build models of assay results. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and apply data science techniques in an industry environment and to develop leads for a Ph.D. or postdoc project. Specific Responsibilities

  • Learn about genomics and big biological data
  • Write code in R, Python, or higher-performance languages
  • Develop statistical approaches to test hypotheses
  • Develop informatics pipelines to summarize and present comparative genomic analysis
  • Maintain a clear record of research progress, data, and algorithms.
Key Success Factors
  • Graduate level student with a deep knowledge of R, statistics, one scripting language, and computational biology methods
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to follow verbal and written instructions and ability to organize and document research results accurately.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to independently ask questions and follow leads in his/her research project
