Job Description:
Vertex Pharmaceuticals Preclinical Safety Assessment department is seeking a Summer Intern (Graduate Level or Advanced Undergraduate) to pilot cutting-edge computational analysis approaches, as applied to translational drug development. Possible projects include:

  • Design and modeling concepts for text mining to rapidly investigate and explain new observations.
  • Develop fit-for-purpose automation approaches to transform, consolidate and/or structure data into more useful forms.
  • Data analytics to bridge qualitative description of disease/toxicity features with quantitative laboratory measurements.
Responsibilities:
  • With supervisor and key stakeholders, use your scientific skills and interests to co-develop a limited-duration project aimed at delivering new and innovative computational approaches for generating scientific insight into novel therapeutics.
  • Proactively communicate updates on progress, limitations and thoughtful options to make adjustments, if needed.
  • Deliver a presentable synopsis of project contributions and outcomes (oral and/or poster).

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At a minimum, must be currently enrolled (and continuing in fall 2018) as an undergraduate science student (mathematics, computer science, information science, data analytics, biomedical engineering or similar) at the junior level or above.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be highly-motivated and have an excellent work ethic.
  • Experience with one or more of: Python or similar language, natural language processing, machine learning algorithms, semantic analysis, text classification, information extraction (un-, semi-, and/or structured) or similar areas of information science.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Examples contributing to automated analyses or meta-analyses of large data sets
  • Demonstrated understanding of computer-aided data visualization
  • Exposure or experience with advanced semantic analysis concepts (e.g., LSA, PLSA, etc.)
