Job Description:
The primary responsibilities of this role, Computational Life Scientist I, are to:

  • Drive the analysis of agricultural-based research projects with a focus on microorganisms through computational analyses of next generation sequencing (NGS) data;
  • The candidate will be embedded in research projects which will require genomic characterization of microbes via comparative genomics, transcriptomics, and other omics technologies;
  • Implement scripts, bioinformatics analyses pipelines, computational tools, and databases for mining and visualization of large microbial NGS data sets;
  • Hands-on collaborations with bench scientists, product development, local data scientists and global Computational Life Science (CLS) scientists.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD with relevant experience in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics or related field, MS with minimum of 2 years relevant experience or BS with minimum of 5 years relevant experience;
  • Proven ability to handle large NGS data sets efficiently using scripts, databases, and other computational tools;
  • Experience in working with high performance compute clusters;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to understand and translate between wet-lab scientists and IT-professionals;
  • Proven record of successful participation in project teams
  • Excellent self-management skills; capacity to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a complex and agile environment and deliver results within set timeframes;
  • Drives results with a strong sense of ownership and proactively identifies and engages in necessary next steps to reach goals;
  • Embrace lifelong learning; ability to self-teach a variety of processes and software solutions, research issues and concepts online and through proprietary documentation;
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (Python preferred), SQL, and Linux environments.
