Job Description:
Advanced Research Computing manages Virginia Tech’s state-of-the-art high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure that serves the research community, including a 300+ node cluster equipped with Intel Xeon Phi co-processors and a 200+ node cluster equipped with multiple GPUs per node. The Computational Scientist will interact regularly with students and faculty to provide both basic and advanced training and devise computational strategies to advance a wide range of research projects. The Computational Scientist will teach, develop, and contribute to training sessions and workshops as well as semester-length courses dedicated to topics in parallel computing. The Computational Scientist will also interface with HPC system administrators to coordinate tasks such as HPC software installation and system configuration in addition to benchmarking, testing, and optimization of new HPC hardware. Required Qualifications: - Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Enginee ring, or related computational science discipline - Strong expertise and experience in parallel computing and HPC - Motivation to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment - Desire to work in an academic setting and adapt quickly to new challenges - Interest in working with cutting-edge supercomputing hardware - Ability to teach and develop coursework on HPC for an interdisciplinary audience - Strong experience in Linux and familiarity with shell scripting - Willingness to troubleshoot complex issues in a team environment - Excellent communication skills Preferred Qualifications: - Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related computational science discipline - Familiarity with job schedulers such as MOAB/Torque, SLURM, or LSF - Familiarity with parallel file systems such as Lustre and/or GPFS - Parallel programming experience in C/C++, Fortran, and/or Python - Ability to program in OpenMP and MPI - Familiarity with accelerators such as the Intel Xeon Phi and GPUs - Previous experience building and maintaining complex scientific software packages in a parallel computing environment - Knowledge of data-intensive computing software and hardware - Previous experience with software packages, especially in scientific application areas of bioinformatics, molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, statistics, data analytics, agent based modeling, climate simulation, and/or computational fluid dynamics Employment Conditions: Must have a criminal background check
