Job Description:
The posting is for a computational scientist in a marine-focused bioinformatics laboratory. Currently, the work of the lab is focused on the application of ?omic technologies to aquaculture, and understanding the metagenomic and transcriptomic environments of marine and estuarine environments.

The position is primarily software and workflow development. The position will provide computational support to develop tools and automated workflows for processing of data emerging from lab research and collaborators. It will involve software development in a cloud-based environment, using version control and automation as much as possible. The position is office-based and a fundamental part of an ?omics and bioinformatics research team.

  • Responsible for software development for analysis workflows, web development for the presentation of data, and cloud compute account management.
  • Responsible for management of software repositories and documentation, and data curation associated with the laboratory sample management.
  • Expected to continue professional and skills development, keep up to date with the latest relevant technologies and methodologies, and explore new web and cloud technologies.

    Minimum Qualification:

    • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution in a mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics or related field and two years of software development or similar role required.
    • Strong programming skills in an appropriate language (e.g. python) and demonstrable software development experience.
    • Ability to do client-side web development (html Javascript).
    • Experience operating in a version control environment preferred.
    • Ability to work in unix-like OS, especially via a terminal.
    • Working knowledge of current database software, i.e. NoSQL.
    • Ability to learn quickly on the job.
    • Ability to manage cloud-compute resources.
    • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written skills to be a proactive member of a growing research group.
    • Familiarity with containers (e.g. docker) Preferred.
    • Experience in server-side web development experience (e.g. node.js, django or PHP) Preferred.
    • Be able to program with a statistical computing language (e.g. R, Matlab or Pandas/NumPy/SciPy) Preferred.
    • Experience of developing and deploying software in a cloud-computing environment (e.g. AWS/Google) especially serverless compute Preferred.
    • Knowledge of the analysis of DNA/RNA sequence data or similar data analysis Preferred.
