This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for HIV/AIDS,Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), Division of Viral Hepatitis (DVH), Laboratory Branch (LB), in Atlanta, Georgia.

Additional selections may be made within the same geographical location CDC-wide.

Duties:

As a Computer Scientist (Informatics), you will:

- Apply computer science methods and techniques as it relates to public health informatics or bioinformatics.

-Serve as a project officer to lead, manage, and guide staff on public health information systems.

-Evaluate systems for performance and advise developers on database optimization techniques.

-Apply new developments to critical or obscure problems in public health informatics or bioinformatics.

-Investigate advanced technologies directed at solving critical business problems.

-Examine complex interrelations of hardware, software, and system parameters to research and develop new systems, platforms, architectures, and tools to achieve new breakthroughs in computing and support the Center's public health informatics mission.

-Prepare technical briefing materials and reports in support of disease prevention research and monitoring activities for senior management.

-Devise organizational plans and procedures and establishes objectives or goals and assesses progress toward their achievement.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements for the GS-1550 Series:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Specialized Experience:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience planning, organizing, and developing solutions in high performance and distributed computing systems as it relates to public health informatics and/or bioinformatics.

Foreign Education: Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
