Job Description:
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Core Infrastructure and Systems Biology Group (CISB) is a part of the Advanced Biomedical Computing Center in the Information Systems Program of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. In addition to providing software and database operational support, CISB develops bioinformatics data mining and integration applications to support the research activities at NCI and NIH.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Data Analyst/Scientist will integrate data from biological annotation databases, structured experimental and clinical data, and unstructured text to develop applications that are easy to use by the scientists and provide valuable information for the patients. Develop custom data mining pipelines for mining information from genomic and phenotypic data, multi-level biological annotations and information from other applications including variant impact assessment tools. Responsible for linking animal model data with human clinical information and making the results available for broad public consumption. Provide project leadership in developing complex data mining and integration applications that are of broad use in cancer research.

Qualifications:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession a Bachelor degree (Masters preferred) in bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, information science, or related field and/or comparable experience in data analytics and data mining.
- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of eight (8) years related experience in bioinformatics, computer and information science with a strong background in data analytics and integration.
- The successful candidate should have the following: Expertise in RDBMS like Oracle and MySQL.
- Expertise in developing web applications with J2EE/PHP/Python.
- Experience in developing applications using NoSQL data stores including key-value, document and graph data stores.
- Knowledge of current bioinformatics experiments and analysis methods including microarray and NGS analysis, to understand the data provenance of how the data was generated, underlying biology and any associated complexities.
- Strong drive and initiative to explore new technologies in data analytics and knowledge mining.
- Able to work on projects independently and collaborate with project teams.
- This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. preferred with emphasis in data analytics or data mining.
- Experience with Hadoop, HBASE or Map-Reduce programming.
- Knowledge of agile web development, experience in developing data integration and visualization tools.
- Expertise in developing REST/SOAP APIs.
- Knowledge of NLP applications in the biological field.
- Some supervisory experience.
- Publications on data mining/integration applications.
