Job Description We’re looking for a coordinator to join the Data Coordination and Archiving Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. In this role you will be leading our efforts in large-scale data management of vertebrate genomics data generated from funded projects and managing internal submissions data processes across the Institute. Responsibilities will include leadership of the data management activities for several international consortia including the 1000 Genomes Project and the follow-on and expanded activities of the International Genome Sample Resource (ISGR). Other data management roles focus on functional genomics data e.g. International Human Epigenome Consortium (IHEC) as well as the HipSci, EBiSC and FAANG projects. Each of these projects has dedicated staff who will be managed by the coordinator. As Coordinator, reporting to the head of the Data Coordination and Archiving Team, you will represent EMBL-EBI at the national and international level as appropriate, and represent your projects and tasks within international collaborations. Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the team leaders and personnel in the Molecular Archive Cluster to define data coordination best practice
  • Work with the team leaders and personnel in the Genes, Genomes and Variation Cluster as required to facilitate data incorporated in EMBL-EBI’s annotation resources
  • Plan data coordination efforts for collaborative and cross-cluster projects such as IGSR/FAANG
  • Work within EMBL-EBI to coordinate the Submissions interface project
  • Manage the day-to-day tasks of the Vertebrate Data Coordination sub-team and the Submissions interface team in their day to day tasks
  • Define technical issues in supporting the needs of different data collection projects and contribute to the development tools to enable project specific workflows
  • Work closely with other coordinators and project leads on data coordination practice to optimise the use, and inform the development of, technical infrastructure across EMBL-EBI teams
  • Work with the EMBL-EBI training team to deliver training and documentation for the team’s activities and projects
  • Communicate the team’s work internally and to researchers in the field
  • Author papers relevant to services delivered by the team
  • Represent the team at internal and external meetings/conferences to present the services and data provided by the team
  • Manage reporting and dissemination of work to funders and assist with development of new collaborations and grants

Qualifications and Experience You should hold a first degree in a biological science or in Bioinformatics, and ideally you will have post-doctoral or equivalent experience in a biomedical research or service environment. A higher degree (e.g. MSc or PhD) is required. At least 5 years of experience with large-scaled omics data sets in a bioinformatics research or production environment is preferred, as is experience of high throughput file transfer methods, process tracking, metadata standards and data QC. Familiarity with Perl/Python/Java, SQL, and data manipulation in a bioinformatics environment are required. You should also be able to demonstrate experience of leading a team with diverse responsibilities and of international collaboration. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and interpersonal skills are required, as is project and personnel management experience.
