Job Description:
We are currently seeking a Data Curator to work on-site in Raleigh, NC.

Responsibilities:

The Data Curator will maintain, preserve, and add value to customer data and digital objects throughout its lifecycle. The curator's activities will enable data discovery and retrieval, maintain quality, add value, and provide for reuse of data. Working closely with federal and contract staff, the Data Curator will have a role in the specification, design, and implementation of tools that integrate, search, and display the data. Integration of both internal and external data sources needs to be supported by consistent data annotation, documentation and storage using community accepted standards. The Data Curator will work individually but also as part of a team.

Duties and responsibilities include:

-Document the context of data and relationships between different forms and functions of the data and its Design, assign, and revise administrative, descriptive, structural, and technical metadata to enable findability and reuse of data.

-Develop and/or utilize existing vocabularies or ontologies to ensure consistency and operability.

-Provide feedback to scientists on quality control (QC) assessment and receive input on the metadata implementation of QC metrics.

-Perform all life-cycle activities for digital objects from researching requirements to long-term curation and Develop and adhere to documented guidance, policies, and legal requirements for preservation.

-Participate in teams that are tasked with integrating data sources into the Data and Knowledge Management System (DKMS)

-Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on data curation

-Communicate needs to software developers to guide Application Programming Interface (API) and tool development for integration.

-Use Open Standards to facilitate exchange and persistence of data through and across different systems.

-Work on teams that extract, load, and transform data into new formats as needed

-Establish process to validate and authenticate data.

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

-D. in Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Environmental Health, or related field.

-Experience as a research data repository manager.

-Experience working in a scientific research setting.

-Demonstrated experience in curating and managing large scientific data sets with particular understanding of data quality assessment, and requirements for longer term digital archiving.

-Experience applying controlled vocabularies, ontologies and/or metadata to scientific data to enable the discovery of resources.

-Understanding of XSLT, XML, and Resource Description Framework (RDF).

-Experience developing queries.

-Understanding of protocols such as Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).

-Highly developed organizational and analytical skills with demonstrable ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, manage own time and set priorities, and learn quickly.

-Highly developed presentation, written, oral and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

-Experience with iRODS or iRODS tools.

-Experience with a database querying language such as SQL.

-Experience with open source, Microsoft, and/or Oracle database platforms.

-Experience with version control.

-Familiarity with computer programming/scripting languages.
