Job Description:
Working with limited supervision, the Data Engineer III will be responsible for the design, development, testing and maintenance of various database applications and artifacts in support of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the various consortium partner's organizational goals. In addition, this position will be responsible for maintaining, monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing existing applications as well helping the data quality team perform research and analysis of various data quality issues. The data engineer III will play a key role in the design development and maintenance of various ETL systems for which the central informatics division is responsible for.

The successful candidate will be a senior level individual contributor with some experience in mentoring/leading less experienced engineers. They will need to have the ability to translate business requirements into specific database infrastructure and artifacts. They will, possesses well developed skills in design, development, implementation and management of databases. They will have introductory experience with either relational or dimensional data modeling. They will be expected to clearly articulate and present technical information at the director and project sponsorship level. They will have extensive knowledge on E TL system design and development with hands-on experience in one or more ETL tools.

The Data engineer III position reports to the Analytics and Data Systems Manager in CIT Informatics.

ResponsibilitiesJob Responsibilities:

  • Develops database architectures to address business requirements, ensuring system scalability, security, performance and reliability.
  • Creates plans for architecture updates and integrates new systems with existing warehouse structure to refine performance/functionality.
  • Proactively identify, troubleshoot and provide remedies for any performance, data quality or other technical issues related to the bioinformatics infrastructure and associated ETL systems.
  • Creates plans for architecture updates and integrates new systems with existing warehouse structure to refine performance/functionality .
  • Participates in troubleshooting and tuning existing data warehouse applications. Conducts research into new data warehouse applications and determines viability for adoption. Assists in establishing development standards.
  • Participates in the development, maintenance, and support of an enterprise data warehouse system and corresponding data marts.
  • Designs database applications such as interfaces, data transfer mechanisms and data partitions to enable efficient access of the generic database structure.
  • Participates in incorporating existing subject areas into an enterprise model. Creates new or enhanced components of the data warehouse.
  • Participates in the design and development of metadata and repository creation.
  • Creates plans for architecture updates and integrates new systems with existing structures to refine performance/functionality.
  • Develop complex SQL queries and Stored Procedures/functions in the SQL server environment.
  • Leads design and code reviews.
  • Mentors and directs junior level resources technical activities.
  • Prepares and presents technical information to a wide variety of audiences up to and including directors and project sponsors.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots database jobs.
  • Independently organizes and manages multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Supports the day-to-day operations of Caisis and HIDRA data repositories.
  • Create database objects such as table spaces, tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, Triggers etc.
  • Maintain referential integrity, domain integrity and column integrity.
  • Prepare written technical design specifications, flow charts and data flow diagrams as needed for new and existing applications.
  • Assist in preparing work estimates for assigned projects.
  • Meet required deadlines as outlined by project team and business partners.
  • Prepare and execute unit tests on all new and modified code.
  • Prepare documentation for deployment purposes and respond to any implementation issues as needed to ensure quality deliverable has been met.
  • Collect, compile and analyze data from various databases and perform statistical analyses.
  • Design, develop, test and implement ETL processes in support of business requirements.
  • Design, develop and test standard and/or ad hoc reports.
  • Work with the team to conceive, develop, deploy, and maintain solutions to meet business and research requirements
  • Produce high-quality output consistent with team and industry best practices.
  • Participate in the planning process around future growth and system scalability.
  • Provide project status updates to manger and others as required.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years professional database reporting development experience with a wide range of business intelligence tools (MS Reporting Services, Cognos, Business Objects, Tableau Software, etc.)
  • minimum of 7 years SQL development experience
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience working with a dimensional data warehousing
  • Minimum of 7 years data warehouse design and development experience
  • Minimum of 7 years ETL design and development experience
  • Minimum of 7 years/expert level Microsoft SQL server experience
  • Minimum of 1 years technical leadership experience
  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications and tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint) Sharp analytical abilities, proven design skills and problem solving skills
  • Enjoys working in a team environment and has a proven record of positive contributions to the work of the team
  • Ability to work independently, multi task & prioritize workload
  • Previous experience in a research/educational stetting and/or support of clinical trials.
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge and expertise of database technologies, along with solid programming, design and system analysis skills.

  • Proficient in working in all phases of database design and data modeling activities
  • Previous work with hospital information systems either connected, or not, to research uses of the data.
  • Previous experience in delivering to end users reports and/or extracts to support research and/or clinical care
