Manages large volumes of genomic sequence data and associated data types in a high?performance computing (HPC) environment at the National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC), thus facilitating the efficient and reproducible analysis of bioforensic samples. MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related computational discipline with experience in large-scale data management, data backup systems, and/or HPC system administration.
- Expert knowledge of Linux operating systems (RedHat/CentOS preferred).
- Strong proficiency with shell scripting and administration tools.
- Experience installing complex software packages in a Linux environment; experience with bioinformatics software preferred.
- Familiarity with next-generation sequencing and associated data types a plus.
- Preferred experience: cluster management and data systems (e.g., SGE, Condor, Hadoop, SLURM); network storage technologies (e.g., NFS, Panasas, RAID); hardware installation, maintenance, and replacement; high-speed networks; programming; relational databases (e.g., MySQL).
- Ability to work on problems of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires review of identifiable factors.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Exemplary organizational skills with a proven track record of working effectively both independently and as a team player.
- Knowledge or experience with biocontainment facilities and procedures, laboratory safety, biosurety, and decontainment is desirable.
- Knowledge or experience with Quality Assurance (QA) programs such as ISO 9001 or ISO 17025 and/or Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)/Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) desirable.
- Must be a citizen of the United States, able to obtain an interim secret clearance leading to a top secret clearance, and suitability for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Current clearance(s) desirable.
- Participation in the Immunization Program through Corporate Occupational Health Solutions, LLC (CorpOHS) as required.
- May be required to participate in NBACC’s alternative work and/or on-call schedule, dependent upon business needs.
- Provides computational and logistical support for genomics and metagenomics projects that make use of next-generation DNA sequencing platforms from Illumina, Pacific Biosciences, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
- Manages transfers of genomic sequence and other data from NBACC laboratories to the NBFAC computing infrastructure, downloads data from public repositories and manages local databases, and transforms data to necessary formats.
- Identifies or develops software to support the HPC infrastructure and for the parallel analysis of massive bioinformatic datasets.
- Assists with the management of a 1000+ core high-performance computing cluster that includes large-memory nodes and GPGPU-capable nodes. Manages hardware, storage, security, networking and system administration.
- Researches, evaluates, develops, and implements new HPC hardware and software solutions to meet current and future demands.
- Works with Bioinformatics Principal Investigators, Engineers, and Analysts to anticipate long-term bioinformatic needs and plans for solutions.
- Adapts quickly to new work assignments, performs assignments outside area of expertise, demonstrates technical proficiency, and manages resources efficiently.
- Works on assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative, while understanding the implications of work and making recommendations for solutions.
- Receives limited instruction on daily work and general instructions on new assignments.
- Maintains a safe work environment by participating in specialized training and review of safety manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Identifies departures from the Quality Management System (QMS) and initiates actions to investigate and prevent such occurrences.
- Operates, maintains, and characterizes the performance of equipment with minimal supervision.
- Serves as a member of a team in developing, validating, and maintaining methods for identifying and characterizing biological threat agents.
- Maintains appropriate records.
- Performs other assigned duties.
