Job Description:
We are currently seeking a Data Scientist to work on-site in Raleigh, NC. Responsibilities: This Data Scientist serves as a task and team and the architect for the overall Data and Knowledge Management System (DKMS) as well as the Digital Asset Inventory (DAI). The Data Scientist will work closely with team members and federal staff to oversee implementation and deployment of the DKMS, integration of various data systems, ontologies, and databases into the DKMS, and to set policies and procedures to govern the overall life cycle. The Data Scientist will ensure end-user needs are addressed and implemented, and oversee end-user support and training. The position requires having a high sense of ownership of problems and requests, establishing and maintaining communication with analysts and consultants, and proactively escalating any issues that cannot be resolved within established timeframes. Duties and responsibilities include: -Responsible for ensuring all requirements are met. -Breaking large tasks into smaller components and assigning them to team members as needed. -Understanding the breadth and depth of the DKMS and the skills needed to manage and grow the DKMS. -For example, adding a new data source could require all of these services: data curation, controlled vocabularies, ontologies, Integrated Rule-Oriented Data System (iRODS) changes, database, file storage changes, programming and coordination with federal staff, other contractors, and third parties. -Ensures the architecture for the overall DKMS and components is created and maintained. Considers input from team members in their areas of expertise, best practices, Subject Matter Experts, and other resources in the architecture; ensures the architecture is consistent. -Keeps abreast of developments in DKMS and iRODS. -Provide overall guidance and expertise in the deployment and development of the DKMS such that it meets needs of end users while implementing data management best practices. -Assist federal staff members, scientists, and post-doctoral research associates, provide support to researchers involved in collaborative and multidisciplinary projects and programs, provide project demonstrations to increase adoption and usage of the DKMS. -Oversee training for the DKMS including having the team provide end-user training as appropriate, or researching and recommending external trainers to the customer as needed. -Draft or review policies, guidelines, plans, standards, and procedures. -Review backup routines and disaster recovery plans for adequacy on annual basis; ensure that the integrity of backups tested on a quarterly basis. Qualifications: Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience: -Experience leading and motivating teams. -Experience in data and knowledge management in a research or biomedical setting. -Experience with a DKMS. -Experience architecting solutions. -Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate information both orally and in writing in a clear, concise manner to technical and non-technical audiences. -Strong analytical and problem solving skills. -Ability to learn new technologies quickly. -Familiarity with a programming language (e.g. C++, Java, .NET, R or Python) and a database querying language such as SQL. -Understanding client requirements Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience: -A graduate degree in bioinformatics, information science, computer science, or other related discipline is strongly preferred. -3-5 years of experience in data and knowledge management in a research or biomedical setting. -Experience with iRODS. -Experience leading a team that supports iRODS.
