Job Description:
The selected candidate will analyze, interpret, and extract insights in organization-wide data in order to assist IMSA in its decision making. This includes modeling complex problems; discovering insights; and identifying opportunities through the use of statistical, algorithmic, mining, and visualization techniques. The candidate will also serve as a bridge between data owners across the Academy, the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) and Information Technology Services (ITS), to ensure consistent collection and storage of data. The selected candidate will be proficient at integrating and preparing large, varied datasets; designing specialized database and computing environments; and communicating results. The selected candidate will collaborate with various Academy departments and internal and external stakeholders to turn data into critical information and knowledge that can be used to make sound organizational decisions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement data collection procedures to support Academy academic, operational, and other objectives.
  • Collaborate with data owners to determine proper data collection and analysis tools and approaches.
  • Partner with data owners and IMSA’s information technology team to ensure the Academy’s new data repository is populated with high-quality, validated data
  • Initiate and deliver innovative ways to look at institutional questions through data mining approaches.
  • Validate findings using a variety of approaches, including experimental and iterative approaches.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy’s strategic plan.
  • Ability to work irregular schedules, including periodic evening and/or weekend hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., statistics, operations research, bioinformatics, economics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics).
  • At least two years of relevant work experience in data analysis or related field. (e.g., as a statistician / data scientist / computational biologist / bioinformatician).
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, Julia, MATLAB, pandas) and database languages (e.g., SQL).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau)
  • Must possess a combination of business focus, strong analytical and problem solving skills, and programming knowledge.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals and diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently, resolve issues, seek help when needed, and work on concurrent projects.
  • Skilled in communicating technical projects and language to a variety of audiences ranging from subject matter experts to lay individuals.
  • Experienced user of common computer hardware (e.g. laptops), office productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office, budget software), mobile devices (e.g. phone), and common peripherals (e.g. printers, others…).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Ph.D. degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., statistics, operations research, bioinformatics, economics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics).
  • Four years of relevant work experience (e.g., as a statistician / computational biologist / bioinformatician / data scientist), including deep expertise and experience with statistical data analysis such as linear models, multivariate analysis, stochastic models, sampling methods.
  • Analytical engagements outside class work while at school can be included.
  • Experience with Hadoop or Apache would be beneficial, though not required.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This role requires the following physical activities: talking, hearing and visual acuity, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, loading, unloading and moving materials/boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.

Additional Info:
Hours/Shift/Work Schedule: This position is a full time exempt position.

Hours worked: 8:00am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours.
