Job Description:
We are seeking a colleague with training and experience in population genetics and linguistics or anthropology to join our highly productive, world-class Ancestry Research & Development Team. Our team not only develops novel algorithms to interpret the data of individual 23andMe customers but also analyzes data from over 2 million customers in order to publish novel findings regarding human genetics and history. We are seeking a team member who is excited to analyze genetic data of millions of people from across the world.

Interpreting the wealth of genetic data now available requires both a keen interest in human history and a penchant for effective statistical and computational methods. At 23andMe, we work with the richest database of genotypes and phenotypes ever assembled. We advance biomedical research and interpret these data for individual consumers.

We are looking for a colleague who is comfortable analyzing large data sets and has strong programming skills and the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively to a wide range of audiences.

What you'll do:

  • Work collaboratively with members of the Research, Engineering, and Product Teams
  • Use a broad array of existing methods and tools to analyze large amounts of data
  • Perform analyses that will advance the understanding of human genetics and shape 23andMe’s consumer product
  • Support long-term R&D projects that bring research advances into 23andMe’s consumer product
  • Provide scientific support to a variety of teams across the company, including Communications and Marketing, in a way that makes scientific knowledge accessible to the average person.
  • Conduct data analysis that supports publication efforts.
What you'll bring:
  • Ph.D. in Genetics or a related field (e.g., Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics)
  • Coursework or research experience in Linguistics, Anthropology, or Human Prehistory
  • Expertise in one or more of Python, R, and C/C++
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for working in a highly collaborative environment
  • Bioinformatics training and expertise
  • A track record of applying innovative methods to drive project success
  • The ability to be proactive, thorough, and independent, and to work effectively within a dynamic, fast-paced, and interdisciplinary team
  • Evolutionary or population genetics research experience; a focus on human population genetics is a plus
