Job Description:
Apply your skills in data sciences in a dynamic environment that combines cutting edge biomedical research with algorithm and software development.

As part of this job, you will perform original biomedical research, design algorithms, and develop software. Specifically, one role will be to develop robust and scalable software for analysis of the mitochondrial genome -- a tiny genome that is passed down along the maternal lineage. While current technologies sequence the mitochondrial genome, this data is typically discarded. Your software toolkit will become part of the production pipeline for analyzing thousands of human DNA samples being processed at the Broad Institute, including samples from a wide range of Mendelian disorders, common diseases (e.g. diabetes, heart disease), cancers, and studies of human history. Having developed this software, you will perform original research in assessing the role of mitochondrial genome variation in the context of many rare and common human diseases. You will work collaboratively with experts in mitochondrial biology and disease (Mootha laboratory) as well as with a large team of data scientists devoted to developing cutting-edge algorithms and robust software (Broad Institute's Data Sciences Platform). Clarity of thought is a must. You must be capable of working in an interactive team environment while conducting self-directed research within broader goals set by the group. You will have the opportunity to publish high quality original papers and presentations. Prior biology background is a plus but not required. However strong background in data sciences and written / oral communication skills are a must.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write, publish, and present original research.
  • Devise new algorithms and approaches to data analysis.
  • Rapidly prototype these ideas, validating their value on novel data sets.
  • Implement and optimize algorithms in the production pipeline for broad use.
Required:
  • PhD in Computational Biology, BioStatistics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience with systems programming language (Java or C/C++).
  • Experience with scripting a plus (eg Python)
  • Experience with scientific computing in R or MATLAB
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Ability to solve complex problems individually and as part of a team
  • Expertise within one of the following fields: Genetics, Genomics, Statistics, or Algorithm Development
