ISCB Job Board

Data ScientistInstitute of Cancer ResearchCancer TherapeuticsUnited Kingdom-London OBJECTIVE OF THE POST:

As part of the ICR/RMH CRUK-Centre Integrated Informatics and Big Data initiative, we have begun the implementation of 'The Knowledge Hub', an exciting new platform designed for sharing, integrating and mining a wide range of internal and public data, including imaging, genomic, transcriptomic, chemoinformatic and clinical data for understanding biological processes and making scientific discoveries for cancer research.

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced data scientist to join the “The Knowledge Hub” team focusing on the research and development of predictive data models to identify cancer biomarkers, cancer sub-types and candidate drug targets. Thanks to the tight connection between the RMH and ICR, model predictions can be tested in the labs and implemented in clinical trials, thus ensuring the strongest impact in patient care, both in the short and long term.

The successful candidate will be working in a stimulating, multi-disciplinary environment, alongside clinicians, chemists, bioinformaticians and biologists. The ICR has a great record in employee satisfaction thanks to its competitive salary & benefits packages, familial environment and career support.

Responsibilities:
• Develop robust statistical models and deep learning algorithms to mine multidisciplinary biomedical data to identify patterns in data that can be used prognostic or predictively for steering patient treatment
• Implement the statistical methodologies to enable the derivation of clinical and biological hypotheses
• Design and implement data quality-control metrics and data integrity tests.
• Understand the data and model complexities and limitations and work with the technical members of the team to design and improve data models
• Communicate research findings through internal reports, journal papers, conferences and talks

Requirements:
• Bachelors in computer science, physics, mathematics, computational biology or related field.
• PhD in a quantitative field highly desirable
• Experience with modern deep learning/data mining techniques and technologies, e.g. probabilistic models, machine learning, Natural Language Processing, Bayesian statistics, clustering analysis, pattern recognition, model design, visualization.
• Deep understanding of statistics and probability.
• Profound knowledge of working with diverse data: data artefacts, data cleaning, sources of error, propagation of uncertainty. Experience with biomedical data is a plus.
• Familiarity with the mathematical and numerical issues in algorithm development e.g., over-fitting, biases, priors, latent variables, convergence, local minima etc
• Excellent programming skills both in scripting and high-level languages
• Demonstrated ability to deliver software tool packages that can be understood, extended and executed by a range of end-users
• Experience in data integration and visualization
• Demonstrated success (peer review process, publications, conference talks).
• Demonstrated ability to work on high impact problems in a collaborative environment.
• Excellent communication skills. Ability to communicate research findings and methodology, for any audience at different levels.
• Any other duties which may be required which are consistent with the nature and grade of the post. Essential : Educated to degree level in computer science, physics, mathematics, computational biology or closely a related field and significant exposure to a research environment

Highly Desirable : Higher research degree in computer science, computational biology, physics, mathematics, biology or closely related field
