Data Scientist Internship - Deep Learning

Portland, OR

This internship position is scheduled to begin in May/June 2017

We are looking for internship candidates in machine learning and data science with strong software engineering skills and a background in deep learning. The team carries out applied research in ML and designs, develops and deploys models to the rest of Cambia. The team has developed and applied various ML algorithms including Neural Networks, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, LDA topic modeling for several healthcare products.

Responsibilities:

-Gather large data sets in a distributed storage and design the analytical approach

-Build an understanding of the healthcare domain and combine with a broad and deep knowledge of ML domain to make contributions to the feature roadmap for the health care problem solving platform.

-Apply coding skills to platform development projects in partnership with other scientists & engineers on team.

-Adapt machine learning (e.g. neural network) algorithms to best exploit modern parallel environments (e.g. EC2 with GPU)

Minimum Qualifications:

-Recent graduate or currently enrolled in graduate degree program focused on Machine Learning, Big Data, Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Computational Linguistics or related degree program (individuals who have completed their degree in the last six months are also encouraged to apply).

-Broad and deep knowledge of machine learning and deep learning research

-Experience with a modern deep learning framework (e.g. Tensorflow/Theano).

-Knowledge in Python, C/C++, Java, and/or C#.

-Interest and passion for deep learning and distributed representations.

-Demonstrated ability to analyze large amounts of data

-Practical ability to visualize data, communicate effectively about data, and utilize data effectively

-Interpersonal skills, cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

-Problem solving capabilities

-Proven track record of achieving results

-Demonstrated software engineer experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or PhD papers

-Excellent oral and written communication skills

-Ability to think creatively and to work well both as part of a team and as an individual contributor

-Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction, with the ability to coordinate complex activities

-Minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average

The following skills/experiences/knowledge are a plus:

-Background with sequence modeling (e.g. RNN, LSTM, GRUs) is a plus.

-Experience building systems based on machine learning and/or deep learning methods.

-Experience with cloud computing and distributed systems.

-Knowledge of health plan operations.

-Practical deep learning research or project experience.
