Job Description:
Data Scientist

Our mission is to turn Geospatial Big Data into actionable intelligence.

Our last project evaluated over a trillion satellite pixels and counted 700 million cars across the US over the last 5 years. In close cooperation with our engineers the Data Science team works to hypothesize, track, tease out and identify any and all signals of use to our customers. We are data detectives and the job is difficult because although we have Big Data, we exist in a persistent state of spatiotemporal data starvation. As a startup, time is always short for us. Thus, the work is fast paced, highly iterative and continuously trading off between what works and what’s best.

Before we even start analyzing real world data we typically build large scale (Monte Carlo) simulations to inform our models and approaches. The actual data analysis typically starts with computer vision and machine learning and ends with rigorous statistical analyses.

Along with our team of data scientists, you’ll work with product managers and engineers to build data driven products and solutions. If you enjoy working with data to build products and solve hard problems in creative ways, you will fit right in. We have several Data Scientist openings, each with a different emphasis. In this position your time will be divided (70/30) between research/development of new products and productizing existing products.

Job Purpose

Owning the exploration and application of any and all data types that might contribute to the development of, and insights into, new products.

Job Duties
Develop (large scale) simulations to assess a new product’s complexity, yield and feasibility Develop training and crossvalidation data sets for machine learning algorithms Conceive of and implement experiments to test hypotheses regarding (statistical) behavior of data/models/products Translate product management, engineering, and business constraints and queries into tractable data science questions Perform indepth data analysis, using statistical and machine learning techniques, to creatively build predictive models Iterate rapidly on everything; all of the above happens in a relatively fast paced business driven environment, you must be comfortable with that.
Skills & Qualifications
Ph.D., or equivalent experience in a quantitative field (physics, mathematics, bioinformatics, computer science etc.) Strong background in some combination of Statistics, Time Series analysis, data modeling and machine learning. At least 3 years practical experience working with large datasets. Excellent data analysis & visualization skills using tools like R, Octave, or SciPy Strong Unix/Linux skills
Additional
Knowledge of scripting languages such as Bash or Python is considered a major asset SQL, PostgreSQL preferred Spatial statistics knowledge a plus
