Job Description:
Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products — Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti — and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer.

AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at Stemcentrx, AbbVie’s South San Francisco, CA location.

As part of a talented and multi-disciplinary team advancing an exciting new approach to drug discovery and development, the successful candidate will be expected to manage a team of bioinformaticians, projects, timelines, and interface with AbbVie Stemcentrx scientists helping them with high throughput assay data analysis, visualization, and cross assay platform analyses in support of both discovery research and translational / biomarker discovery. This impactful position will also require the hiring and mentoring of additional bioinformatics or computational biology headcount to support the goals at AbbVie Stemcentrx. The ability to work independently, while effectively interacting and communicating with team members, Research leaders and the Software Engineering group, is also prerequisite.

Requirements:

• PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, or computational biology, with a strong publication record.

• Minimum of 5 years of managerial experience, leading a mixed team of senior and junior bioinformaticians / computational biologists.

• Excellent leadership capabilities with good experience guiding and motivating effective teams to foster research collaborations.

• Proven ability to recruit and hire world class talent.

• A solid understanding of cancer genomics and molecular biology, particularly how these affect the development of targeted biologics.

• Broad experience in the analysis and display of data generated by high-throughput molecular assays including, but not limited to, next generation sequencing (whole transcriptome –short read (Illumina) and long read (Pac Bio), fusion transcripts, targeted genome and copy number variation), mass spectrometry based proteomics, Microarray, qPCR. Ability to combine data from different platforms run on the same tumor sample to generate in depth biological understanding of the tumor samples.

• In-depth knowledge of oncology-specific public consortium databases, their standards, how these databases relate to the above described molecular assays, and how they can be leveraged for target discovery / identification.

• Ability to compare external and internal datasets across different platforms.

• A working understanding of the statistical principles behind current best practices and quality control in high-throughput molecular data analysis.

• Clear understanding of the translational medicine / biomarker discovery space and ability to build bioinformatics capability to match scientific team build out for this functional area.

• Strong experience in the use of a high-level programming language such as R, Python or Perl in a linux environment. Familiarity with OmicSoft / Array Studio software.

• Utilization of software development and request tracking in systems (Atlassian Suite or other).

• Exceptionally strong communication, data presentation and data visualization skills.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to handle several concurrent, fast-paced projects through a mix of supervision, project managing, and direct execution.
