Position Summary
This newly established position will build and supervise the operations of a new multi-instrument Flow Cytometry Core Facility in an integrated core facility center at the Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) in New York City. The responsibilities of this position include supervising technical staff, performing a broad range of florescence activated cell sorting and analysis procedures, maintaining equipment, developing standard operating and quality assurance procedures, ensuring regulatory and safety compliance, and providing consultation on project design and data analysis,. Responsibilities include evaluation, implementation and optimization of existing and emerging flow cytometry protocols, technologies and applications. Responsibilities also include supervision of project scheduling, sample and process tracking, quality analysis of results, troubleshooting, and billing for services. Key responsibilities include tracking production statistics and quality assessments and reporting to the Assistant Dean for Research Resources, including reporting on the financial and technical status, achievements and challenges, and scientific impact of the facility. Responsibilities also include involvement in grant proposals that support the facility and the projects of the facility users. This position is responsible for purchasing for the facility and for interactions with vendors, including instrumentation engineers and field application specialists. The core director interfaces with faculty, clinicians and students in support of their projects, with the staff of the other core facilities in the WCMC core facility center (including cores for imaging, genomics, proteomics and metabolomics, chemical synthesis, biorepositories, and bioinformatics), and with cores at other institutions. Responsibilities include organizing core facility hosted workshops and seminars and core facility user group meetings.
Position Activities
1. Responsible for developing standard operating protocols and supervising the operations of the newly created Flow Cytometry Core Facility. Responsible for ensuring that a high level of services are provided to the Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) and New York-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) research and clinical communities.
2. Supervises daily operations of the core facility, including a broad range of florescence activated cell sorting and analysis procedures, flow cytometry and accessory instruments, sample submission and processing; and data generation, analysis, archiving and return. Oversees maintenance of facility equipment and infrastructure and acts as primary liaison with equipment manufacturers and support vendors. Monitors and orders supplies and creates invoices for core use.
3. Evaluates, implements and optimizes existing and emerging flow cytometry protocols, technologies and applications, in collaboration with facility users, with vendors, and with colleagues at similar facilities at other institutions.
4. Provides technical training on flow cytometry techniques and applications for both facility staff and users. Interacts with researchers to identify potential core support of their proposed projects and on project design. Performs customer services such as fielding questions on sample processing, questions on scheduling, questions on billing and resolutions of problems. Acts as main point of contact for support from IT services.
5. Determines metrics for quality assessment and tracks quality of flow cytometry services; sets pricing for services; participates in creating core facility budget; creates and presents reports on the financial and technical status, usage and performance, achievements and challenges, and future plans of the core facility.
6. Responsible for core staff evaluation and training. Responsible for ensuring staff possess appropriate credentialing and licensure and have taken all required HIPAA and other regulatory compliance courses.
7. Ensures emergency back-up systems are operational and serves as a key point of contact for infrastructure and equipment emergencies and for disaster plans.
8. Schedules processing of samples, including coordinating with other WCMC core facilities (e.g., genomics and epigenomics facility, proteomics and metabolomics facility) for sample processing steps and for delivery of data results to users.
9. Markets the resources and services of the core facility by giving talks on campus and at scientific and technical conferences. Gives tours of the core facility. Organizes core facility hosted seminars and workshops. Maintains the core facility web site with the latest information regarding services, instruments and prices. Initiates and supports grant proposals that support the facility and the projects of the facility users. Tracks publications and grants enabled by the core facility’s resources and services.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
A Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related field, or equivalent experience, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a core facility or biomedical research laboratory.
Experience with flow cytometry technologies, applications and analysis tools.
This position requires ability to troubleshoot, meticulous record keeping, and the ability to supervise and motivate staff.
Must enjoy working with others, have initiative, and be reliable. Attention to detail and multitasking abilities are critical, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Excellent computer and communication skills are required.
Highly Desired Requirements
A minimum of 5 years of experience working in a flow cytometry core facility and proven management experience is preferred.
Experience with supervising a core facility preferred. Prefer strong critical thinking and problem solving skills with proven ability to apply creative approaches to complicated questions.
Record of achievement for delivery of team goals and experience in building successful relations with supervisors, peers, suppliers, partners and stakeholders, are essential.
