Job Description:
We are seeking an exceptionally creative and motivated individual to join our Seattle-based company as the Director of Informatics reporting to the CSO, responsible for overseeing, managing, and participating in all ongoing informatics analysis projects and the software development process. This candidate will be challenged to grow, supervise, and mentor a team of bioinformaticians, computational biologists, and software engineers. Your group’s mandate will be to meet a substantial breadth of computational needs in a young and rapidly growing genomics company and you will be afforded significant autonomy for achieving these. The informatics team supports the custom experimental design and analysis of data from studies related to oncology and other areas of human health, using a diverse skill set in programming, genome sciences and statistical analysis. The team also closely interfaces with our assay development wet-lab group to assist in building new analytical tools to facilitate biochemical optimization. In both roles, a creative mindset, proven abilities to create and foster a team environment, and excellent data presentation skills are a must.

YOU WILL:

  • Direct and oversee all informatics aspects of projects and software engineering.
  • Grow, supervise, and mentor a team of bioinformaticians, computational biologists, and software engineers and lead regular informatics meetings, and code review.
  • Assist with experimental design and planning with regard to anticipated data needs for external customers and internal development projects.
  • Manage analysis, interpretation and graphical representation of project data using a combination of our custom software and open source tools.
  • Generate and present data reports for team, partners and customers that translate complex ideas into relevant and intuitive explanations.
  • Anticipate and recognize informatics challenges and make recommendations for solutions and allocation of resources needed to meet goals.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant literature, attend national meetings and keep up on new genomics analysis techniques and approaches.
  • Work with collaborators and team to prepare conference abstracts, manuscripts and informatics aspects of grant and patent applications.
  • Assist with the interface between software engineers and R+D team help test, troubleshoot and improve experimental designs and yields.
YOU ARE:

  • Skilled at high-quality scientific programming applied to biological topics.
  • Internally driven to dig deeply through various data types to seek out answers, gain insights from unexpected findings and question assumptions.
  • Familiar with current landscape of bioinformatics tools in next-generation DNA sequencing and standard NGS data formats.
  • Expert in at least one programming language.
  • Able to query relevant genomic variation and cancer genome databases.
  • Thorough with code documentation and experienced with version control practices and tools.
  • Knowledgeable in statistical methods and their application to genomics.
  • A self-directed individual who takes on challenges, yet is comfortable asking for help yourself and advocating for your team when needed.
  • A person with strong interpersonal skills with a history of success working in, and leading, cross-functional teams.
  • Someone who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment with ambitious goals and timelines and is able to quickly adjust to new projects and priorities.
  • A person with 5+ years of hands-on experience in bioinformatics, computational genomics or a related field.
  • A person with 3+ years of experience managing bioinformaticians, computational biologist, software engineers, or individuals from related fields.
A HIGHLY QUALIFIED CANDIDATE IS:
  • Able to grow and lead an informatics team to achieve company-wide goals, and had proven experience of such.
  • A person with a record of scientific achievement (strong publication record, history of success in scientific grant writing, history of invited presentations and/or relevant patent filings).
  • Experienced in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry from previous roles.
  • Knowledgeable of cloud environments, containerization technologies, pipeline development and data fidelity and information security best-practices.
