Job Description:
Stanford University is seeking a Director of Research Informatics in the School of Medicine who will play a critical leadership role in enabling the innovative use of data science technology, resources, and analytics to advance our clinical and basic science research missions. The Director will be responsible for setting a vision and practical action plan to create, operate and continually evolve services and tools that will support the complex and diverse research activities of Stanford faculty and research staff that depend on effectively accessing and using biomedical data at one of the world's top biomedical research institutions working on the frontiers of science and health care. The incumbent will have a major role in enabling Stanford Medicine to harness its vast biomedical data resources to catalyze innovative research and lead to Stanford becoming pre-eminent in learning healthcare systems and data-driven medicine.

The Director will be responsible for overseeing a highly-qualified group of professional staff and fostering a strong culture based on team building, career development and excellence. The group is anticipated to comprise approximately 10 individuals, including several who hold masters and doctoral degrees.

• Specifically, the Director of Research Informatics will be responsible for:*

• Creating and managing a data science service organization that understands and meets the needs of users in discovering, accessing, and using biomedical data in their research.

• Understanding the needs of faculty and staff researchers whose research depends on discovering and using biomedical data, developing requirements for meeting those needs, and creating and implementing strategic plans for meeting the requirements.

• Managing and facilitating access to data sets including clinical data, genomics, imaging, wearable/sensor data, population-scale data sets and others.

• Evaluating, implementing and managing processes and novel tools including both custom-developed software and third party packages to enable meeting user data science needs.

• Recruiting, hiring and managing the staff within the Research Informatics group.

• Foster a strong team environment, career advancement opportunities and new skills development.

• Collaborating with the Research IT and Biostatistics groups as a trifecta of organizations providing data infrastructure and services.

• Fostering strong relationships with industry partners as well as very startups with high potential to enable Stanford's research objectives.

• Establishing and continually evolving an actionable vision for efficient processes and novel tools to meet the needs of the research community under the guidance of the Faculty Advisory Committee, the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Stanford Medicine leadership.

• Working closely with the Stanford Medicine Research IT and health system technology groups to facilitate the ability of researchers to pursue translational research in the clinical setting and reduce barriers for the use of data at Stanford.

• Maintaining a leading edge knowledge of technology developments related to biomedicine including genomics, machine learning, biobanking, imaging and other technology subspecialties.

• Collaborating with The Stanford Center for Clinical and Translational Research and Education - Spectrum and Stanford's broader research organization to understand and support informatics needs.

• Representing Stanford School of Medicine by participating in research informatics collaboratives, such as: Accrual to Clinical Trials - ACT (http://www.act-network.org/) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute's PCORnet initiatives.

• Ensuring that initiatives comply with relevant Federal and State regulations and Stanford's data security policies.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Advanced degree in Computer/Computational/Data Science, Biomedical Informatics with an emphasis in Health Informatics, or Domain Sciences with computer/computational/data specialization or equivalent experience

• Five or more years' experience health and research informatics

• Demonstrated effectiveness in fostering strong relationships and a highly collaborative approach toward problem solving and strategic planning.

• Five or more years' experience in health and biomedical research leadership

• Expertise with clinical data from common EMR platforms (Epic preferred).

• Expertise with design, implementation and support of informatics support platforms for research projects and/or clinical trials

• Understanding and experience running a service organization serving user needs for biomedical data

• Experience with clinical and biomedical data

• Experience with HIPAA and other Federal and State regulations relating to research data usage

• Experience with medical terminologies and ontologies

• Experience with IRB processes and requirements

• Outstanding communication, writing and inter-personal abilities, including skills such as attitude, diplomacy, collaboration, persuasiveness and analytical ability.

• Must be able to serve as a bridge between the research organization and technical staff, and provide clear and concise communications across the organization and at varying levels

• Self-driven and excellent planning and execution skills with a proven ability to establish and meet impactful goals and objectives

• Highly proficient at leading and developing technical staff.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize efforts and accurately represent customers' and departments' needs.

• Experience developing and managing budgets.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

• Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required.

• Experience leading or overseeing the work of technical staff.

• Understanding of relevant scientific, engineering, or technical disciplines.

• Ability to problem solve.

• Ability to synthesize and articulate technical and scientific methodologies, specifications, and information.

• Experience leading scientific, engineering, or technical research projects or programs.

• Knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles.

• Ability to work and communicate effectively with others.

• Strong customer relationship and consensus building skills.

• Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.

• Ability to resolve issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture.
