Selecting the targets on which we conduct long-term, expensive research is one of the most important decisions in drug discovery with poor choices often not becoming clear until years later when programs fail in clinical trials. Recent advances in genetics, genomics, cell biology and data science/informatics have the potential to improve our understanding of target biology dramatically and so improve target progression decisions. GSK has responded to this opportunity by forming a new Target Sciences group (TSci), bringing together scientists from these disciplines. Cross-disciplinary TSci teams will work in close partnership with other GSK drug discovery groups and the academic community, e.g. through the ground-breaking Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation (http://www.targetvalidation.org/), to advance the science of target validation. We now have a number of job opportunities in this group, allowing successful candidates to use their skills to be part of exciting, innovative scientific programs which will have a genuine impact on drug discovery.
The selected Director, Statistical Consulting will
• Influence scientists and managers, including those at senior levels, to use statistical tools and thinking to enhance research productivity
• Use a wide range of statistical methods to deliver statistically sound experimental designs and data analyses
• Identify existing statistical methods or develop new ones to improve the designs, analyses, and interpretations of GSK studies
• Provide leadership within the statistics team, potentially including the management of junior statisticians
The position requires good technical and communication skills, the desire to help scientists advance their research, and the ability to work with scientists from varied backgrounds. Successful consultants are innovative, pragmatic, and flexible, thriving in a dynamic environment with frequent new challenges.
