The Genomics Technology Infrastructure team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) seeks a highly motivated individual committed to developing and delivering web views. Big data management and dissemination is one of the most important biological information problems in genomics. The Ensembl project (http://www.ensembl.org) and Ensembl Genomes project (http://www.ensemblgenomes.org) provides access to over 30,000 genomes served from one of the world's largest computer resources for genomic analysis developing Open Source software (http://github.com/Ensembl). Thousands of scientists worldwide depend on access to these data to help their research. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of other developers with responsibilities including: · Developing new features for data visualisation and analysis. · Working to create our next-generation website. · Helping to ensure the regular scheduled releases of Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes are delivered on-time in conjunction with our back-end development team. · Helping to maintain the public services delivered by the two projects both in the UK and on our AWS mirrors. · Developing the Ensembl platform in conjunction with the Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes teams. · Providing web support for other EMBL-EBI projects mainly based on Ensembl technology or data. Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will have a masters level qualification or similar practical experience in computer science, bioinformatics or related subjects. You must have experience of developing web interfaces. Experience of UX and web design is desirable as is UI development methodologies including analytics, logs, speed regression testing. Evidence of working in a dynamic, team-based environment or contributing to a large, shared code-base is desirable. Knowledge of biology/genomics/bioinformatics is desirable but not essential. The post holder must be highly self-motivated and be able to work independently. You are expected to have excellent English communication skills, written and verbal, both to facilitate effective communications with other team members and to communicate with external collaborators and users. You must also have an attention to detail, be capable of delivering to deadlines, able to delegate and prioritise tasks. You must have experience of Perl (or equivalent scripting language such as Python, Ruby or PHP), HTML, CSS and JavaScript. They should be comfortable with working on the Linux command line, developing on remote infrastructure and be able to use software development tools including Git. Experience of MySQL is desirable. Experience of the Ensembl API is desirable but not essential.
