Job Description:

We are looking to recruit an experienced web developer to join the Ensembl Genomes team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

Ensembl Genomes (http://www.ensemblgenomes.org) is a project at the EBI, focusing on non-vertebrate species that utilises the Ensembl software platform for genome analysis and annotation. Ensembl has been developed since 2000 with a focus on vertebrate genomes, and we are now committed to using it as the primary point of access for genome-scale data from across the taxonomic space. The need for such a system is becoming steadily more acute as new technologies are dramatically decreasing the cost of data production.

The public interface of Ensembl Genomes is maintained by a small team of web developers, whose role includes the development of new features (to capture new data types and to reflect the specific needs of individual species), the maintenance of the software infrastructure needed for public service, and coordination with other members of the Ensembl Genomes team to manage new data releases. The team works closely with other members of the Ensembl and Ensembl Genomes teams on the short and longer-term development of the Ensembl platform, and provides some web support for other projects mainly based on Ensembl technology, or based on Ensembl data.

Applicants should have a degree in a relevant field and proven professional programming experience (ideally developing web applications). Applicants should be expert in Perl. Knowledge of any of the following is highly desirable: Apache, mod_perl, relational database management systems, user interface development, data visualisation, Ensembl, Drupal, testing frameworks. A working knowledge of biology/biochemistry/genomics is desirable but not essential.

Maintaining communication with several collaborating teams is an important aspect of the role. Good communication and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. A flexible mindset, a capacity for independent work, and a commitment to the delivery of a high-quality public service, are all required.
