Job Description:
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking an enthusiastic biologist to join Ensembl outreach, an energetic group responsible for training and supporting our users from experimental laboratory scientists to bioinformaticians. Other tasks include disseminating project information and contributing to website usability. Ensembl outreach is part of the Genomics Technology Infrastructure team and is part of a larger outreach effort that supports several resources including Ensembl, Ensembl Genomes and the International Genome Sample Resource (IGSR).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering training workshops on our website, tools and APIs; involving public presentations and extensive worldwide travel
  • Creating and maintaining documentation and e-learning materials
  • Direct support of user queries via email and RT (Request Tracker) including website, data and API support
  • Disseminating of key developments via social media
  • Feedback to development teams
  • Supporting usability testing and web design
You will also work with EMBL-EBI's general Outreach and Training Team (OTT) and will report to the Ensembl Outreach Project Leader.

Qualifications and Experience:

You should have a background in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics or a related field; a PhD or equivalent experience would be highly advantageous.

You must have excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, allowing him/her to communicate easily with a variety of scientists. You should also work well as a part of a team and should be comfortable delivering presentations and workshops at scientific institutes worldwide. The candidate should be familiar with commonly used bioinformatics resources and tools.

An ideal candidate must be highly self-motivated and be able to work independently. They are expected to have excellent English communication skills, written and verbal, both to facilitate effective communications with other team members and to communicate with external collaborators and users. They must also have an attention to detail, be capable of delivering to deadlines, able to delegate and prioritise tasks.

An understanding of UNIX/Linux is helpful. Previous experience with a programming language (e.g. Python, Perl or R) and working with relational databases would be beneficial. In addition, prior experience of bioinformatics analysis methods would be useful.

Contract Duration: 3 years

Grading: 5 (monthly salary starting at £2,552 after tax).
