Job Description:
The Hermiston Ag Research and Extension Center (HAREC) invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.

The position is responsible for supporting the Extension Plant Pathology program research at the HAREC. The faculty research assistant will help organize and execute field and laboratory experiments toward the completion of the plant pathology program’s research objectives. Research will be conducted on the computer and in the field, greenhouse, and lab.

The incumbent will work closely with the project PI, graduate, and undergraduate students, and will be responsible for, analyzing results, writing reports and manuscripts, and contributing to the development of research approaches and directions.

Position Duties:

60% – Computational work, data collection and analysis, and report writing. GIS database development, epidemiological model development, development of tools to automate report writing, bioinformatics analysis, manuscript development and publication. Development of applications for results delivery to clientele.

25% – Lab work: Isolating and culturing fungi from soils, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing.

5% – Mentorship: Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in training undergraduate and graduate students working in the laboratory.

10% – Fieldwork: Survey sampling of grower fields and conduct planned experiments at the HAREC.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s of Science degree in the Biological Sciences related to plant pathology, computer science, computational biology, and/or geographic information systems.

Experience working in both the lab and field.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications:

-Master’s of Science degree in the Biological Sciences related to plant pathology, computer science, computational biology, and/or geographic information systems.

-Knowledge of computer programming languages (i.e. Java, Perl), geographic information systems (i.e. ArcGIS, GRASS GIS), document preparation (i.e. LaTeX), mathematical modeling (i.e., MATLAB, Octave) and statistical programming environments (i.e. R, Julia).

-A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
