Job Description:
Pacific Biosciences is seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist with a strong customer focus to support bioinformatics analysis for collaborators and customers using SMRT® sequencing data in the Central Northern / Benelux area of Europe. The candidate will employ expertise in customer training, bioinformatics, data analysis, biological insight, software engineering and systems administration. The ability to communicate and interact with customers both post and pre-sales, with field applications support and engineers, to interact with product marketing, and to communicate results to diverse audiences, are important aspects of this role.

This scientist will be working in a fast-paced commercial environment, interacting with customers, scientists and engineers from a wide variety of backgrounds. This individual is a partner to the customer in the understanding and analysis of data derived through use of SMRT sequencing. The position is field based and the candidate will be part of the EMEA FAS and bioinformatics team.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

• Assist and enable customers and collaborators in analysis to ensure successful use of Pacific Biosciences instrumentation in their laboratories.

• Problem-solve to overcome technical challenges during installation or use of Pacific Biosciences analysis tools.

• Ensure timely technical and application assistance in response to customer inquiries.

• Train bioinformatics customers and collaborators on Pacific Biosciences data characteristics, Pacific Biosciences analysis tools, and target applications.

• Utilize Pacific Biosciences analysis tools and also open source academic tools to support customer projects for target applications.

• Collaboration with Field Applications Specialist team and the Engineering team.

• Conduct scientific presentations to internal and external audiences.

• Provide technical, and applications feedback to product marketing

Position Requirements:

Personal Skills:

• Minimum of a Master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred in bioinformatics, life science, statistics, and/or computer science degree.

• Native Dutch or German language. Excellent command / highly proficient in spoken and written English.

• Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills.

• The role is field based and up to 30% travel for onsite support and training is predominantly expected for Benelux and Northern Germany.

• Highly motivated and proven ability to work independently, e.g. in a home office based position.

• Ability to work in a strong team driven and highly performing organization.

• Great team player who can effectively integrate internal and field based activities to support customer needs.

• Used to working cross-functionally.

• The candidate is a customer-minded individual with the empathy to understand customer concerns and how to address them appropriately.

• Ability to work in a fast paced and growing commercial environment. Highly self-organized and responsive.

• The candidate must have a valid and clean driver’s licence.

Technical Skills:

• 3+ years’ experience in bioinformatics or tech support.

• Well-experienced with Next Generation Sequencing analysis and pipelines.

• Experienced with common sequence analysis tools and workflows such as sequence alignment, genome visualization, comparative genomics, structural variation discovery, and epigenetics.

• Proficiency with a statistical package such as R or Matlab.

• Intermediate level of experience in Unix operating systems.

• Knowledge of a scripting language such as Perl or Python is desirable.

• Hands-on experience and basic knowledge in operation of next-generation DNA sequencing instruments and essays is a great benefit.

• Excellent trouble-shooting abilities.

• Experience with case management or ticketing systems is required.

• Experienced in conducting scientific presentations to internal and external audiences.

• Familiarity with the manuscript publication process and associated experimental design requirements.
