The Literature Services Team leads the development and maintenance of Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC), a large repository of over 30 million full text biomedical research articles and abstracts. These records are supplemented with links to biological databases, citation networks, and semantic annotation. Europe PMC is being developed by groups at the EMBL-EBI, the British Library, and the University of Manchester and is funded by 27 funders of biological and biomedical research across Europe, led by the Wellcome Trust.

We are looking for a developer with a strong front-end development portfolio to help create responsive web pages that deliver a great user experience and meet web standards. We have a number of specific new interface projects to deliver, hence the creation of this additional opening in our team.

The position reports to the Team Leader for Literature Services.

The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. Working as part of a development team that includes Java and database developers, you will be specifically responsible for front-end web development. You will have an excellent knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript (including Ajax and jQuery) and experience of building cross-platform, responsive websites. You will be experienced working with XML/JSON data from web services, and you’ll have demonstrable experience of working on data-driven websites with high user traffic.

Using a test-driven approach to development, you will be familiar with using testing frameworks. You will be aware of development best practices and have experience of using source control systems, such as Git.

You will have knowledge of accessibility and usability standards and a desire to build a service that our users enjoy using. Day to day you’ll work closely with our User Experience Designer to implement designs that are based on user research, business requirements and web development community best practices. You’ll have an eye for visual design and experience of creating re-usable interface components.

You will relish working on projects with complex requirements and be able to solve problems creatively and effectively. You will demonstrate excellent communication skills, be a team player and collaborate effectively with other team members. On some projects you will use Agile and Lean development methodologies, including SCRUM and Kanban.

It would be an advantageous if you have some experience of content management systems, data visualisation technologies (e.g. D3) and development with server-side technologies such as JSP.

Ideally you’ll have a degree or relevant experience in computer science or related topic. Experience working in bioinformatics, biological resource development and/or technical experience within scientific publishing or information science would be an advantage.

You will have the benefit of working on a fantastic campus with excellent facilities, within an international team. There will be occasional opportunities to travel overseas to conferences.

You will be willing to learn new things and develop your skills and knowledge on the job. But you will also benefit from a range of training opportunities and seminars within the organisation.

Along with your CV, please supply up to three URLs to websites that you have played a significant or leading role in the creation of in the past two years.
