Job Title: Genomics and Bioinformatics Manager Closing Date of vacancy: 31 October 2014
Division: Molecular Pathology
Team: Tumour Profiling Unit
Type of Contract: Fixed Term
Length of Contract: 3 years
Salary Range: £48,710 to £57,082 p.a. inclusive Work Location: London Hours per week: 35 The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research organisations, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, and discovered many of the early chemotherapy drugs. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment. The ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Our unique partnership with The Royal Marsden and ‘bench-to-bedside’ approach allows us to create and deliver results in a way that other institutions cannot. Together we are rated in the top four cancer centres globally. The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.
The Tumour Profiling Unit (TPU) at the ICR is a state-of-the-art facility that uses Next Generation Sequencing technologies to investigate cancer genomes in patient biopsies from diagnosis and throughout treatment. As part of the TPU, the Genomics Facility provides a comprehensive set of genomic profiling platforms aimed at understanding tumour biology and cancer treatment. Operating alongside the Genomics Facility, the Bioinformatics Technical Support service provides bioinformatics support to research teams across the ICR and Royal Marsden as part of the Informatics Facility.
The Genomics and Bioinformatics Manager will be responsible for managing the operation of the genomics platforms and workflows within the TPU. The post holder will also be responsible for managing the bioinformatics workflows operating within the TPU, and those workflows established as part of the Bioinformatics Technical Support service.
This is an exciting role that will be instrumental managing two important services at the ICR. Applicants will therefore be experienced in the management of genomics and bioinformatics on an institutional level, and in meeting the requirements of researchers.
An important element of the role will be in education and outreach across the organisation to ensure that researchers gain maximum benefit from the services offered and are supported in their use.
The successful candidate will have considerable relevant management and technical experience and will be expected to possess a relevant postgraduate degree. He/she will need to possess excellent communication and management skills.
Appointment will be on a Fixed Term Contract for up to 3 years in the first instance.
