Job Description:
Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Genomics Data Scientist / Computational Biologist to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is full-time, and it is on-site in Bethesda, MD.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Data Scientist is responsible for processing, analyzing complex data and developing insights from experimental data, including NGS data sets through the use of multiple open source tools, statistical models, data mining, and data visualization techniques.

The candidate will operate in a multi-disciplinary group of scientists and software developers who offer data analysis, software development and consultation services to the NIH research community in the areas of bioinformatics and computational biosciences. Candidates must also have strong teaching abilities in both one-on-one and classroom environments to be able to provide support and training to the research community. The successful candidate for this position will be self-directed, highly collaborative and must be able to provide researchers with expertise in at least two of the following domains:

  • Transcriptomics (Bulk cell and single cell RNA-Seq data analysis, statistics)
  • Metabolomics/Proteomics/Lipidomics (data analysis and integration with other omic such as Transcriptomics or Metagenomics)
  • Biological Data Mining and Interaction Networks (functional and pathway enrichment, identification of regulatory networks through integration of gene/expression profiles, metabolites and DNA methylation, etc.)
  • Bacteria, Viruses and Eukaryote parasite genomics (DNA-Seq, de novo assembly, comparative genomics, genome evolution)
  • Epigenetics (ChIP-Seq, Methyl-Seq, etc.)
  • Human and mammalian genomics (Variant calling and annotation, WGS, Exome-seq, Whole genome genotyping, GWAS)
  • Metagenomics (Survey or WGS, human microbiome).
REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD (or M.S/M.A. with equivalent experience) in mathematics, statistics, computational biology, life science or related field.
  • Must have experience with sequence data formats and processing from Next Generation platforms (Illumina, PacBio, etc.)
  • Hands on experience with analyzing and managing large-scale genomic data (e.g. whole genome sequencing, exome-seq, target enrichment, amplicon sequencing, RNA-seq, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Python or another high-level scripting language
  • Experience with common tools for:
    • NGS (BWA, GATK, VEP, STAR, Samtools, Picard, HISAT2, Cufflinks, etc.)
    • ChIP-seq; HiC-seq (Bowtie, MACS, SICER, HOMER, Juicer, etc.)
    • Proteomics (PEAKS Studio, mzR, etc.)
    • Metabolomics (metaboAnalyst, GNPS, etc.)
    • De novo assembly (e.g. SOAPdenovo, Velvet, Abyss, and ALLPATHS-LG)
    • Genome annotation (e.g. Augustus, MAKER)
    • Genome association (e.g., PLINK, GEMMA, MERLIN)
    • Pathways and Networks (IPA, Cytoscape, GSEA, DAVID, GO, etc.)
  • Experience with statistical analysis in R Bioconductor is strongly preferred
  • Experience using cloud computing and/or high-performance computing system
  • Experience using pipeline development platforms preferred (WDL, Snakemake, etc.)
  • Experience with microarray analysis preferred
  • Attention to detail, time management skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team with a high level of personal and professional drive and initiative Ability to design and deliver up-to-date training materials, courses, presentations, and workshops to the research community
