Job Description:
The Global Head, Preclinical Modeling and Simulation (pcM&S) NIBR will be a highly selected leader to oversee the modeling and simulation strategy and operations for a global team of expert modelers supporting research teams in all therapeutic areas, from discovery to First-In-Human Trials.

The incumbent will lead a scientific group in PK Sciences that, using modeling and simulation, increases productivity by optimizing scientific and business decision-making in Novartis research and development. This key role ensures application of innovative techniques for quantitative integration of disease, target and compound knowledge to improve internal decision making, optimize lead candidate PK and biological profiles, and increase probability of success for development candidates. The Head of Preclinical Modeling and Simulation, NIBR will work across the drug discovery and development as follows:

• Research: Advise early discovery programs on drug design for optimal therapeutic benefit. Use modeling for proposed small molecule and biological targets to estimate the needed therapeutic behavior for successful development, model target pathways to evaluate potential biomarkers, and expected efficacy and potential toxicity.

• Early development: Use modeling to anticipate optimal PK properties, and assist with dose optimization and regimen selection for early clinical and proof of concept trials. The team will integrate pre-clinical animal data to support PK and disease modeling and quantify biomarker signals to support translation of preclinical data to anticipate clinical dose exposure response analyses.

• Full development: Partner with Computational PK and GDD PMX groups to use translate modeling information into dose and regimen selection and combination therapy decisions. In addition, the group will work with these teams to support regulatory submissions, sequence/optimize both nonclinical and clinical trial designs, anticipate clinical covariates and responder populations, and benchmark Novartis compounds against competitors.

The team will collaborates closely with other quantitative and experimental disciplines, including Biostatistics, Statistical Computing, Pharmacometrics, Investigative ADME, Bioanalytics, Research Pharmacology, Chemistry, Biologics and Chemical Biology to develop and advise portfolio decisions and strategies.

Major Accountabilities include:

1. Direct, supervise, and manage portfolio of Preclinical M&S contributions to integrate relevant drug discovery and development, technical, and target / compound / disease area knowledge in the planning and execution of robust development programs and disease area strategies.

2. Lead the Preclinical M&S organization with responsibility for the management, allocation, and develop-ment of all M&S associates and resources.

3. Anticipate organizational needs for modeling and strategic support based on in-depth understanding of the relevant issues and the drug development process. Identify opportunities, and advocate and drive integration and implementation of PMX contributions. Lead infrastructure / process / scientific consulting improvement initiatives.

4. Develop next generation modeling and simulation capabilities to serve new therapeutic modalities and emerging technologies

5. Establish high performing, industry recognized Preclinical M&S organization that attracts top talent.

6. Provides on-boarding, training, mentoring and career development of staff, and oversees constructive and continuous performance evaluation.

7. As full member of the PK Sciences Leadership Team, contributes to overarching disciplinary and departmental strategy for research and development across all Therapeutic Areas.

Minimum requirements:

*Minimum requirements:

Education: Ph.D in pharmacology, biology, engineering, mathematics, statistics, computational science, or a field with significant modeling-related content (or equivalent Ph.D/MD)

Languages: Excellent English required (oral and written)

Experience:

• >15 years of relevant postdoctoral, academic, industry, or government experience with a track record in one or more of the following: Quantitative Pharmacology, Systems Pharmacology, Mechanistic Modeling, Disease Modeling, Pathway Modeling, Pharmacometrics.

• Broad, integrative experience and a driven approach to the use of modeling and simulation in drug research and development.

• Expert knowledge of drug discovery, drug development and HA guidelines relevant to pre-clinical and clinical drug development. Substantial track record of identifying and leading contributions to policies that shape best practice in M&S.

• Internal and external strong and established track record of establishing M&S excellence.

• Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills. Strong record in leading global scientific improvement/change initiatives.

• Significant experience in coaching, development and influencing scientists and physicians.

• Outstanding verbal and written communications and presentation skills and in particular the ability to effectively represent M&S issues to a wide range of target audiences.
