Job Description:
Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist with the conduct of translational informatics research related to cancer at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. Projects available include, but are not limited to: 1) Integrative analysis of multiple types of high-throughput data, such as gene expression microarray, DNA methylation, histone modification, and next generation sequencing data (such as RNA-Seq, CHIP-Seq, and exome-Seq) related to cancers; 2) Computational prediction of microRNA targets with next generation sequencing data; 3) Experimental design issues of next generation sequencing method, such as those in RNA-Seq; 4) Biomarker classification of tumor diagnosis/progression in population based studies. Collaborate with various investigators in immune/cancer research. Prepare manuscripts and present research at meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Status as a full-time graduate student admitted to or registered in a graduate program for a MS or PhD degree in bioinformatics, mathematics, engineering, biostatistics, or public health.

• Good academic standing (non-probationary status, and 3.0 GPA or above)

• Experienced in programming languages such as Matlab, R, C, C++, and Java. Efficient with scripting languages such as Perl. Familiar with Unix OS.

• Sufficient coursework in statistics, mathematics.

• Experience in machine learning and data mining.

• Self-motivation, persistence and a strong desire to learn.

• Good team player with a collaborative spirit.

• Good skills in oral and written English.

• Be flexible and able to lead in the projects with some guide from the mentor.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Knowledge of biology.

• Training in bioinformatics in areas such as sequence alignment, microarray data analysis, and next generation sequencing.
