The primary function of this role, as Senior Group Leader, Computational Life Science, is to lead a team of scientists who perform various omics based analysis, work with wet lab scientists in the design of experiments, integrate wet lab and in silico data to increase predictability of outcome and manage disparate data to promote downstream analysis by Trait Research (TR) scientists in support of the trait discovery process for various TR programs. The group leader should attend meetings organized by the
program and group leaders to ensure that his/her team is addressing the functional and operational needs of the projects. The jobholder should also monitor and integrate new technologies identified within and outside of Bayer to increase the efficiency of the discovery process. In-depth understanding of current developments in algorithms, databases and software tools is a necessity for this position as it is paramount to innovation and efficiency. The manager of this group will interact with other scientific TR staff to understand how CLS tools and databases can achieve their goals more quickly and facilitate data sharing and interoperability. The leader of this team will also interact closely with his/her CLS counterpart in Ghent to align with, understand and contribute to the global goals of Computational Life Science while communicating effectively the objectives of TR goals in Morrisville.

In addition this role will be responsible for:
Lead and develop bioinformatics, biostatistics and informatics scientists as part of the TR and BCS people†s strategy; Develop a deep understanding of the business objectives and research programs in TR and apply CLS solutions to meet TR needs and to allocate and budget appropriate resources; Extend existing CLS capabilities by developing, seeking and acquiring cutting edge technology; communicate and apply such technology to challenge assumptions and transform status quo and in cooperation with the global CLS Strategy Teams; Strategize and collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team of scientists to offer data-driven solutions for controlling pests, weeds, and diseases in row crops; Understand the biological basis of plant, microbe and pest/pathogen interaction and apply appropriate omics and CLS technologies to identify input traits and elucidate their mechanism-of action; Champion CLS TR to become an effective ambassador of TR across other BCS functions; Collaborate with internal and external IT professionals to provide continuous, optimal operation of CLS infrastructure and to best leverage their expertise; Comply with Bayer regulations and safety practices and promote such behavior as well as promote a constructive feedback culture. Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our LIFE values. More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Ph.D. or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics Genomics, Biology or related field and 6+ years of post-Ph.D. industry/academic experience; Management experience supervising Ph.D. level scientists by articulating a coherent and inspirational vision for the team and forming a strong, positive culture; Demonstration of cultivating innovation in previous positions and ability to think beyond in silico based solutions; Innate desire to collaborate and be open and accepting to different perspectives and cultural views; Strong communication skills to translate technical and scientific information to various levels of scientists; In depth familiarity with various public genomics databases, statistical software tools and packages such as R and bioinformatics algorithms, particularly in the analysis of NGS data; Extensive experience in programming/scripting languages (e.g. C, Python), databases (e.g. relational, noSQL) and IT infrastructure (e.g. GPFS, high performance computing cluster); In depth knowledge and experiences in the following areas would be highly desirable: o insect, microbial and plant genome assembly;
o RNA-seq and transcriptome assembly;
o transcription profiling analysis;
o design of experiment and statistical modeling;
o pathway modeling and analysis;
o metagenomics and metatranscriptomics analysis.
