Research and Development:

GRAIL, Inc. is developing paradigm-changing clinical assays for early cancer detection, based on unique biological insights from high-intensity sequencing analysis of circulating cell-free nucleic acids. GRAIL is seeking passionate and talented individuals to join us in realizing this mission, which has the potential to dramatically reduce the global burden of cancer.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Head of Bioinformatics will be responsible for providing leadership in the creation of GRAIL’s analysis methods, algorithms, pipelines, and verification / validation of clinical tests.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead and manage bioinformatics efforts across GRAIL to drive research, technology development, and product development projects.

Maintain a scientific culture of collaboration, innovation, rigor, and transparency.

Work in close collaboration with assay, software, and clinical development functions to deliver mission critical projects.

Openly and effectively communicate goals, progress, results, and challenges across GRAIL; and with collaborators.

Create novel technical approaches and IP that push performance beyond current capabilities within GRAIL and the field.

Translate innovations into product improvements.

Set goals for the bioinformatics function that are aligned with GRAIL’s critical path project.

Ensure budgets, schedule and performance requirements are met.

Bring more top talent to the team to build bioinformatics capabilities.

Mentor, develop, performance manage, and retain team members.

PREFERRED EXPERIENTIAL BACKGROUND:

Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, or related field is required.

10+ years relevant industry experience required.

Highly regarded in bioinformatics field for both scientific and clinical contributions.

Proven track record of hiring and development of staff, building successful teams.

Proven track record of innovation as evidenced by patents, publications, and products.

Proven track record of designing and developing clinical grade bioinformatics next generation sequencing data analysis solutions.

Strong command of statistics as applied to analysis of NGS data and analytical study design.

Demonstrated ability to work with assay teams and an in depth understanding of assay performance and improvement approaches.

Deep knowledge of both academic and commercial informatics solutions.

Demonstrated technical and people leaderships skills and a history of success working in cross functional teams. Understanding of statistical packages such as R or Matlab.

Project management experience.

Experience developing both locally and cloud deployed bioinformatics applications is desirable.

Experience with technical assessment of third party software solutions willingness to lead a combined buy and build strategy is desirable.
