Job Description:
The Infectious Diseases Area at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research in Emeryville, CA, is seeking a Bioinformatics Investigator to support preclinical and clinical research towards the discovery and development of new antibacterials and antivirals. The successful candidate will combine molecular biology and bioinformatics expertise with the ability to work closely with experimental biologists in a small, embedded bioinformatics team. The Investigator’s primary responsibility will be to support the research efforts of the Bacteriology group, with additional opportunities to support efforts in the Virology group. The Investigator will apply their knowledge of genomics and analytical methods across multiple data types including Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), proteomics, and metabolomics. The Investigator will be part of the Infectious Diseases Bioinformatics team, and will closely coordinate the custom development and application of software tools and analysis pipelines with fellow computational biologists aiding research across the Infectious Diseases Area. Minimum requirements Education/Experience: • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, biology, mathematics, statistics, or related field, relevant industry experience preferred; or Master’s with minimum 5 years relevant industry experience. • Demonstrated strong scientific curiosity and initiative. • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team (experimental biologists, chemists, bioinformaticists, etc.). • Demonstrated ability to present and explain complex data analysis concepts to diverse scientific audiences. • Expertise working in Linux environments. • Expertise in R. • Expertise with Python or other scripting language. • Strong statistics background. • Track record of building custom scientific software tools / pipelines. • Ability to collate and merge diverse data types from multiple sources (internal and publicly available) to enable integrative analyses. Additional desired skills: • Visualization of genomic data and analysis results. • Experience working in HPC / Cloud Computing environments. • Machine learning techniques. • Experience with sequence analysis. • Experience with proteomic or metabolomic data analysis. • Laboratory experience in cell or molecular biology. • Knowledge of drug discovery and development process.
