Job Description:
The School of Biological & Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) includes >250 researchers (ranging from technician to PhD Student to Professor) performing cutting-edge research in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. These sciences are changing fast thanks to dramatic technological improvements including the 10,000x drop in DNA sequencing cost since 2007. We are great at taking advantage of the exciting new possibilities this creates. However, most of our researchers have only limited experience with big data or High Performance Computing (HPC).

The School is therefore recruiting an exceptional person to help improve our use of computing resources, to drive forward informatics research in the School. We're looking for someone who likes to make things happen, who is a problem solver and is passionate about carving themselves a role with a broad range of skills. We need someone who is keen and has a can-do attitude for this exciting and varied role.

The role will initially include:

General systems administration (software installation & configuration, setting up automated monitoring of CPU & I/O usage, account management).
Project-specific system administration (e.g., setting up local Galaxy or Gmod servers).
Project-specific hacking, scripting, debugging or optimising (e.g., in ruby, shell, R, node/javascript, python and/or perl).
Training new and existing users how to effectively use QMUL HPC resources.
Identifying, exploring & implementing better computing processes (e.g., using the HPC virtualisation, containers, cloud computing, single board computers, DevOps for research).
Keeping up-to-date with new approaches in a changing research environment.
Maintaining a professional-level of internal service for academic staff, students and researchers.

Depending on your interests the role can subsequently evolve to be either more hands-on with the science, or more at the level of strategic development of the school’s resources.

We mostly compute on QMUL’s 2500-core Scientific Linux cluster, which includes fourteen, fat 48-core/512Gb-RAM machines, but also run MacOS, Ubuntu, Raspbian and Windows. We value lifelong learning, agile workflows, open data and open source. You will interact and work with all kinds of researchers and with QMUL’s Research Computing team. You will work closely with the Director of Research and Informatics working group with regard to development of informaticians, particularly with regards to their technical support needs. You will take pride in creating an environment to support the cutting-edge work of our researchers and in pushing our resources to their full potential.

The role is full-time and permanent. For further details and role specifics please refer to the job profile.

Salary will be in the range of £43,888 - £48,996 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Salary will be according to qualifications, skills and experience. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme
