Job Description:
The Smith Lab at Emory University seeks to understand the role of genetic and epigenetic variation in predicting various disease outcomes and pregnancy related outcomes. They have one opening for an intern to work closely with the PI and the group’s Application Developer and gain first-hand experience in analyzing genetic and epigenetic data. He/she is expected to develop skills in data integration, data management, biostats, data analysis, algorithm development, genomics, text mining and epigenetics. They have one opening for an intern to work closely with the PI and the group’s Application Developer and gain first-hand experience in analyzing genetic and epigenetic data. He/she is expected to develop skills in data integration, data management, biostats, data analysis, algorithm development, genomics, text mining and epigenetics. Familiarity with some of these concepts is preferred. Other responsibilities of this position include –
- Apply functional and statistical analyses of genomic and epigenetic data from patient samples
- Develop pipeline, application and databases as needed
- Leverage existing public and commercial bioinformatics resources and tools
- Design, implement, test, maintain, and support software applications
- Contribute to bioinformatics process optimization and standardization
- Assist with preparing manuscripts and presentations
- Bachelors in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or relevant field
- No prior lab or industry experience required
- Expertise with R and familiarity with Perl and other languages such as Python is required
- Working knowledge of statistical concepts including linear regressions, Anova, heatmaps required.
- Advanced skills utilizing bioinformatics algorithms, tools and resources, e.g. sequence retrieval, alignment and clustering techniques, expression profiling and protein related analysis, major databases and standards in the field
- Familiarity with NGS bioinformatics tools (BWA, Novoalign, GATK, etc.) is a plus
- Fluency in database management systems (MySQL, REDCap)
- Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with clinical, research, and technical staff
