Job Description:
We are looking for an intern to collaborate with R&D scientists in the development of a multifunctional, GUI-based bioinformatics application for assessing transgenic DNA constructs prior to transformation of plants. The deliverable will contain at least three functional assessment tools.

  • It should provide a means for assessing homology between transgenic DNA and known protein-based toxins or allergens.
  • Allow for the assessment of homology between small RNA introduced into a plant with the transcriptomes of plants and animals.
  • Perform codon optimization of a gene based upon the target organism. Assessments will be performed using standard bioinformatics alignment algorithms (e.g. BLAST and FASTA) with customized output.
Development preferentially performed using Python or Java to support easy maintenance and flexibility. Potential for intern to lead effort to prepare and submit publication to a scientific journal upon completion. Additional projects and/or functionality will be considered as time permits.

Requirements:

Ideal candidates for this role will have:

  • A basic understanding of bioinformatics and biology is preferred.
  • Good understanding of the theoretical basis of experimentation.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills and analytical ability.
  • High regard for quality work.
  • Highly collaborative, self-motivated, and flexible. Good organization with written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong willingness to learn, accept new challenges, and work independently.
  • Experience with Python or Java
Responsibilities:

Responsibilities for this role will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Gather software requirements from stakeholders (e.g. R&D and Regulatory).
  • Develop and present a GUI prototype, iterate on design, and provide a fully-functional deliverable with documentation.
  • Records and summarizes design and implementation strategy (orally and written).
  • Actively participates in discussions and meetings.
Education:

Recent graduate or currently majoring in computer science, bioinformatics, or related discipline from a 4-year college or university.
