Job Description:
Investigate signaling pathways of importance to human disease.

Project 1:

The caspase-11 non-canonical inflammasome plays a significant role in host defense against Gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Citrobacter rodentium, Salmonella typhimurium, and Shigella flexneri. Intracellular lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activates caspase-11 causing pyroptotic cell death, IL-1b secretion, and lethal septic shock. We recently identified Gasdermin D (Gsdmd) as an essential executor of pyroptotic cell death. The intern’s project will focus on the mechanism of Gsdmd activation through biochemical and genetic approaches.

Project 2:

Interested in gene regulation, embryonic development and keen to apply machine learning methods? Our group is studying a pathway that is essential to embryonic development and yet not well understood. We have genome-scale RNA-seq for wild-type and cells with a key component of the pathway knocked out already in hand and a large RNA-seq time-course experiment is underway. The goal of this internship will be to use these data to improve our understanding of the pathway and how it relates to embryonic development. These problems are open ended with opportunities to use machine learning to delve deeper and consider additional related datasets.

Target Start Date: Summer 2017
